General guidelines

English style

The English prose should be modern (but not too casual) and fluent and eloquent (but not too pompous). Ethnonyms and locatives follow natural English — e.g. kosalesu → "among the Kosalans", kosalānaṁ → "of the Kosalans".

Pali to leave untranslated

Listed in dictionary-stem form; apply English -s for plurals where the context requires it.

Terms to translate, but with the original word left inside brackets

Invariant: whenever you translate a Pāli term from below, append the original Pāli form in square brackets every time it appears.

For untranslated terms (the list above), do not use brackets — just italicize them with *.

Nikāya and sutta titles

Follow the Bhikkhu Bodhi / Wisdom Publications convention for the main Nikāya names:

For individual sutta titles, translate the meaningful part; do not mechanically append "Discourse" or "Sutta" every time. E.g. "Sālasutta" -> "At Sālā", "Dhammacakkappavattanasutta" -> "Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dhamma".

Caveats

When a Pāli compound contains an untranslated root term, translate the grammatical/relational parts into English while keeping the root term in Pāli. Prefer natural English prepositions ("with", "of", "in", "from") except when heavier constructions like "endowed with" are fluid and beautiful. When the compound is a dvanda (pair), split it into its components joined by "and". Always add the original Pāli in square brackets so that the reader can trace the Pāli back. Some examples:
