1. The Chapter on Forms, Etc.

1.1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

Thus have I heard—

1.2ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā sāvatthiyaṁ viharati jetavane anāthapiṇḍikassa ārāme.

at one time, the Bhagavā was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

1.3Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

There the Bhagavā addressed the bhikkhus:

1.4“bhikkhavo”ti.

"Bhikkhus."

1.5“Bhadante”ti te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

"Bhante," those bhikkhus replied to the Bhagavā.

1.6Bhagavā etadavoca:

The Bhagavā said this:

2.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekarūpampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthirūpaṁ.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single form that so completely occupies a man's mind [citta] as this — the form of a woman.

2.2Itthirūpaṁ, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti.

The form of a woman, bhikkhus, occupies a man's mind [citta]."

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekasaddampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthisaddo.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single sound that so completely occupies a man's mind [citta] as this — the sound of a woman.

1.2Itthisaddo, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti.

The sound of a woman, bhikkhus, occupies a man's mind [citta]."

1.3Dutiyaṁ.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekagandhampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthigandho.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single scent that so completely occupies a man's mind [citta] as this — the scent of a woman.

1.2Itthigandho, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti.

The scent of a woman, bhikkhus, occupies a man's mind [citta]."

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single taste that so completely occupies a man's mind [citta] as this — the taste of a woman.

1.2Itthiraso, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti.

The taste of a woman, bhikkhus, occupies a man's mind [citta]."

1.3Catutthaṁ.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekaphoṭṭhabbampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, itthiphoṭṭhabbo.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single touch that so completely occupies a man's mind [citta] as this — the touch of a woman.

1.2Itthiphoṭṭhabbo, bhikkhave, purisassa cittaṁ pariyādāya tiṭṭhatī”ti.

The touch of a woman, bhikkhus, occupies a man's mind [citta]."

1.3Pañcamaṁ.

The form of a man, bhikkhus, occupies a woman's mind [citta]."

1.3Chaṭṭhaṁ.
