1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppanno vā kāmacchando uppajjati uppanno vā kāmacchando bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, subhanimittaṁ.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which sensual desire that has not arisen comes to arise, or sensual desire that has arisen grows more and more abundant, as this: the attractive nimitta [subhanimittaṁ].

1.2Subhanimittaṁ, bhikkhave, ayoniso manasi karoto anuppanno ceva kāmacchando uppajjati uppanno ca kāmacchando bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattatī”ti.

For one paying inappropriate attention [ayoniso manasikāra] to the attractive nimitta [subhanimittaṁ], bhikkhus, sensual desire that has not arisen comes to arise, and sensual desire that has arisen grows more and more abundant."

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which ill will that has not arisen comes to arise, or ill will that has arisen grows more and more abundant, as this: the nimitta of resistance [paṭighanimittaṁ].

1.2Paṭighanimittaṁ, bhikkhave, ayoniso manasi karoto anuppanno ceva byāpādo uppajjati uppanno ca byāpādo bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattatī”ti.

For one paying inappropriate attention [ayoniso manasikāra] to the nimitta of resistance [paṭighanimittaṁ], bhikkhus, ill will that has not arisen comes to arise, and ill will that has arisen grows more and more abundant."

1.3Dutiyaṁ.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannaṁ vā thinamiddhaṁ uppajjati uppannaṁ vā thinamiddhaṁ bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, arati tandī vijambhitā bhattasammado cetaso ca līnattaṁ.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which sloth-and-torpor that has not arisen comes to arise, or sloth-and-torpor that has arisen grows more and more abundant, as these: discontent, lethargy, yawning, drowsiness after meals, and slackness of mind.

1.2Līnacittassa, bhikkhave, anuppannañceva thinamiddhaṁ uppajjati uppannañca thinamiddhaṁ bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattatī”ti.

For one with a sluggish mind [līnacittassa], bhikkhus, sloth-and-torpor that has not arisen comes to arise, and sloth-and-torpor that has arisen grows more and more abundant."

1.3Tatiyaṁ.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannaṁ vā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ uppajjati uppannaṁ vā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cetaso avūpasamo.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which restlessness-and-worry that has not arisen comes to arise, or restlessness-and-worry that has arisen grows more and more abundant, as this: the non-settling of the mind.

1.2Avūpasantacittassa, bhikkhave, anuppannañceva uddhaccakukkuccaṁ uppajjati uppannañca uddhaccakukkuccaṁ bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattatī”ti.

For one whose mind has not settled [avūpasantacittassa], bhikkhus, restlessness-and-worry that has not arisen comes to arise, and restlessness-and-worry that has arisen grows more and more abundant."

1.3Catutthaṁ.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā vicikicchā uppajjati uppannā vā vicikicchā bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, ayonisomanasikāro.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which doubt that has not arisen comes to arise, or doubt that has arisen grows more and more abundant, as this: inappropriate attention [ayonisomanasikāro].

1.2Ayoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva vicikicchā uppajjati uppannā ca vicikicchā bhiyyobhāvāya vepullāya saṁvattatī”ti.

For one paying inappropriate attention [ayoniso manasikāra], bhikkhus, doubt that has not arisen comes to arise, and doubt that has arisen grows more and more abundant."

1.3Pañcamaṁ.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppanno vā kāmacchando nuppajjati uppanno vā kāmacchando pahīyati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, asubhanimittaṁ.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which sensual desire that has not arisen does not arise, or sensual desire that has arisen is abandoned, as this: the unattractive nimitta [asubhanimittaṁ].

1.2Asubhanimittaṁ, bhikkhave, yoniso manasi karoto anuppanno ceva kāmacchando nuppajjati uppanno ca kāmacchando pahīyatī”ti.

For one paying appropriate attention [yoniso manasikāra] to the unattractive nimitta [asubhanimittaṁ], bhikkhus, sensual desire that has not arisen does not arise, and sensual desire that has arisen is abandoned."

1.3Chaṭṭhaṁ.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppanno vā byāpādo nuppajjati uppanno vā byāpādo pahīyati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, mettā cetovimutti.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which ill will that has not arisen does not arise, or ill will that has arisen is abandoned, as this: liberation of mind through goodwill [mettā cetovimutti].

1.2Mettaṁ, bhikkhave, cetovimuttiṁ yoniso manasi karoto anuppanno ceva byāpādo nuppajjati uppanno ca byāpādo pahīyatī”ti.

For one paying appropriate attention [yoniso manasikāra] to liberation of mind through goodwill [mettā cetovimutti], bhikkhus, ill will that has not arisen does not arise, and ill will that has arisen is abandoned."

1.3Sattamaṁ.

The seventh.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannaṁ vā thinamiddhaṁ nuppajjati uppannaṁ vā thinamiddhaṁ pahīyati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, ārambhadhātu nikkamadhātu parakkamadhātu.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which sloth-and-torpor that has not arisen does not arise, or sloth-and-torpor that has arisen is abandoned, as these: the element of initiative, the element of striving, the element of exertion.

1.2Āraddhavīriyassa, bhikkhave, anuppannañceva thinamiddhaṁ nuppajjati uppannañca thinamiddhaṁ pahīyatī”ti.

For one with energy aroused [āraddhavīriyassa], bhikkhus, sloth-and-torpor that has not arisen does not arise, and sloth-and-torpor that has arisen is abandoned."

1.3Aṭṭhamaṁ.

The eighth.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannaṁ vā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ nuppajjati uppannaṁ vā uddhaccakukkuccaṁ pahīyati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cetaso vūpasamo.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which restlessness-and-worry that has not arisen does not arise, or restlessness-and-worry that has arisen is abandoned, as this: the settling of the mind.

1.2Vūpasantacittassa, bhikkhave, anuppannañceva uddhaccakukkuccaṁ nuppajjati uppannañca uddhaccakukkuccaṁ pahīyatī”ti.

For one with a settled mind [vūpasantacittassa], bhikkhus, restlessness-and-worry that has not arisen does not arise, and restlessness-and-worry that has arisen is abandoned."

1.3Navamaṁ.

"I see no other single dhamma, bhikkhus, by which doubt that has not arisen does not arise, or doubt that has arisen is abandoned, as this: appropriate attention [yonisomanasikāro].

1.2Yoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva vicikicchā nuppajjati uppannā ca vicikicchā pahīyatī”ti.

For one paying appropriate attention [yoniso manasikāra], bhikkhus, doubt that has not arisen does not arise, and doubt that has arisen is abandoned."

1.3Dasamaṁ.
