1.1“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, appamattakaṁ imasmiṁ jambudīpe ārāmarāmaṇeyyakaṁ vanarāmaṇeyyakaṁ bhūmirāmaṇeyyakaṁ pokkharaṇirāmaṇeyyakaṁ;

"Just as, bhikkhus, the delightful gardens, delightful forests, delightful grounds, and delightful lotus ponds in this Jambudīpa are few;

1.2atha kho etadeva bahutaraṁ yadidaṁ ukkūlavikūlaṁ nadīviduggaṁ khāṇukaṇṭakaṭṭhānaṁ pabbatavisamaṁ;

yet far more numerous are these: the rugged and uneven banks, the treacherous river crossings, the places of stumps and thorns, and the rough mountains;

1.3evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye thalajā, atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye odakā.

so too, bhikkhus, few are those beings that are land-born; far more numerous are those beings that are water-born.

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who are reborn among humans;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye aññatra manussehi paccājāyanti.

far more numerous are those beings who are reborn elsewhere than among humans.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye majjhimesu janapadesu paccājāyanti;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who are reborn in the middle countries;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye paccantimesu janapadesu paccājāyanti aviññātāresu milakkhesu.

far more numerous are those beings who are reborn in the border countries, among those without understanding, among barbarians.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye paññavanto ajaḷā aneḷamūgā paṭibalā subhāsitadubbhāsitassa atthamaññātuṁ;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who possess discernment [paññā], are not dull, not mentally deficient, and are capable of understanding the meaning of what is well-spoken and ill-spoken;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye duppaññā jaḷā eḷamūgā na paṭibalā subhāsitadubbhāsitassa atthamaññātuṁ.

far more numerous are those beings who are of little discernment [paññā], dull, mentally deficient, and incapable of understanding the meaning of what is well-spoken and ill-spoken.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye ariyena paññācakkhunā samannāgatā;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings endowed with the noble eye of discernment [paññā];

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye avijjāgatā sammūḷhā.

far more numerous are those beings who have gone into blindness [avijjā], bewildered.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye labhanti tathāgataṁ dassanāya;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who get to see the Tathāgata;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye na labhanti tathāgataṁ dassanāya.

far more numerous are those beings who do not get to see the Tathāgata.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye labhanti tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who get to hear the dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayaṁ] proclaimed by the Tathāgata;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye na labhanti tathāgatappaveditaṁ dhammavinayaṁ savanāya.

far more numerous are those beings who do not get to hear the dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayaṁ] proclaimed by the Tathāgata.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye sutvā dhammaṁ dhārenti;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who, having heard the dhamma, retain it;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye sutvā dhammaṁ na dhārenti.

far more numerous are those beings who, having heard the dhamma, do not retain it.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye dhātānaṁ dhammānaṁ atthaṁ upaparikkhanti;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who examine the meaning of dhammas that have been retained;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye dhātānaṁ dhammānaṁ atthaṁ na upaparikkhanti.

far more numerous are those beings who do not examine the meaning of dhammas that have been retained.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammaṁ paṭipajjanti;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who, having understood the meaning and the dhamma, practice in accordance with the dhamma;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye atthamaññāya dhammamaññāya dhammānudhammaṁ na paṭipajjanti.

far more numerous are those beings who, having understood the meaning and the dhamma, do not practice in accordance with the dhamma.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye saṁvejaniyesu ṭhānesu saṁvijjanti;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who are stirred at occasions that inspire stirring;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye saṁvejaniyesu ṭhānesu na saṁvijjanti.

far more numerous are those beings who are not stirred at occasions that inspire stirring.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye saṁviggā yoniso padahanti;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who, being stirred, exert themselves wisely;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye saṁviggā yoniso na padahanti.

far more numerous are those beings who, being stirred, do not exert themselves wisely.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye vavassaggārammaṇaṁ karitvā labhanti samādhiṁ labhanti cittassekaggataṁ;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who, making relinquishment their object, attain samādhi, attain singleness of mind [cittassa ekaggatā];

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye vavassaggārammaṇaṁ karitvā na labhanti samādhiṁ na labhanti cittassekaggataṁ.

far more numerous are those beings who, making relinquishment their object, do not attain samādhi, do not attain singleness of mind [cittassa ekaggatā].

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye annaggarasaggānaṁ lābhino;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who receive the finest food and the finest flavors;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye annaggarasaggānaṁ na lābhino, uñchena kapālābhatena yāpenti.

far more numerous are those beings who do not receive the finest food and the finest flavors, subsisting by gleaning, living on what is brought in a bowl.

1.1… Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, appakā te sattā ye attharasassa dhammarasassa vimuttirasassa lābhino;

… So too, bhikkhus, few are those beings who receive the taste of meaning, the taste of dhamma, the taste of liberation;

1.2atha kho eteva sattā bahutarā ye attharasassa dhammarasassa vimuttirasassa na lābhino.

far more numerous are those beings who do not receive the taste of meaning, the taste of dhamma, the taste of liberation.

1.3Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ:

Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus:

1.4‘attharasassa dhammarasassa vimuttirasassa lābhino bhavissāmā’ti.

'We will be those who receive the taste of meaning, the taste of dhamma, the taste of liberation.'

1.5Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

This is how you should train yourselves, bhikkhus."
