6. The Finger-Snap Chapter

1.1“Pabhassaramidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ.

"This mind [citta], bhikkhus, is luminous.

1.2Tañca kho āgantukehi upakkilesehi upakkiliṭṭhaṁ.

And yet it is defiled by adventitious defilements.

1.3Taṁ assutavā puthujjano yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.

The uninstructed worldling does not know it as it truly is.

1.4Tasmā ‘assutavato puthujjanassa cittabhāvanā natthī’ti vadāmī”ti.

Therefore I say: 'For the uninstructed worldling, there is no development [bhāvanā] of mind [citta].'

1.1“Pabhassaramidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ.

"This mind [citta], bhikkhus, is luminous.

1.2Tañca kho āgantukehi upakkilesehi vippamuttaṁ.

And it is freed from adventitious defilements.

1.3Taṁ sutavā ariyasāvako yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

The instructed noble disciple knows it as it truly is.

1.4Tasmā ‘sutavato ariyasāvakassa cittabhāvanā atthī’ti vadāmī”ti.

Therefore I say: 'For the instructed noble disciple, there is development [bhāvanā] of mind [citta].'

1.5Dutiyaṁ.

The second.

"If a bhikkhu, bhikkhus, cultivates a mind [citta] of goodwill [mettā] even for just a finger-snap,

1.2ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave:

he is called, bhikkhus:

1.3‘bhikkhu arittajjhāno viharati satthusāsanakaro ovādapatikaro, amoghaṁ raṭṭhapiṇḍaṁ bhuñjati’.

'a bhikkhu who dwells not devoid of jhāna, who follows the Teacher's instruction, who acts on advice, and who does not eat the country's alms-food in vain.'

1.4Ko pana vādo ye naṁ bahulīkarontī”ti.

What then of those who practice it extensively?

1.5Tatiyaṁ.

1.1“Ye keci, bhikkhave, dhammā akusalā akusalabhāgiyā akusalapakkhikā, sabbe te manopubbaṅgamā.

"Whatever dhammas, bhikkhus, are unwholesome, partaking of the unwholesome, on the side of the unwholesome — all of them are preceded by mind.

1.2Mano tesaṁ dhammānaṁ paṭhamaṁ uppajjati, anvadeva akusalā dhammā”ti.

Mind arises first among those dhammas; unwholesome dhammas follow right after."

1.3Chaṭṭhaṁ.

The sixth.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single dhamma that so causes unarisen unwholesome dhammas to arise and arisen wholesome dhammas to decline as, bhikkhus, heedlessness.

1.2Pamattassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For the heedless person, bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline."

1.3Aṭṭhamaṁ.

The eighth.

1.2Kusītassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For the lazy person, bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline."
