1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā vā akusalā dhammā parihāyanti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, vīriyārambho.

“I do not see, bhikkhus, even a single other dhamma by which unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline, as does this, bhikkhus: the arousal of energy.

1.2Āraddhavīriyassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one with energy aroused, bhikkhus, unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Paṭhamaṁ.

1.2Mahicchassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one with many wishes, bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Dutiyaṁ.

1.2Appicchassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one with few wishes, bhikkhus, unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Tatiyaṁ.

1.2Asantuṭṭhassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one who is discontented, bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Catutthaṁ.

“I do not see, bhikkhus, even a single other dhamma by which unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline, as does this, bhikkhus: contentment.

1.2Santuṭṭhassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one who is contented, bhikkhus, unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Pañcamaṁ.

“I do not see, bhikkhus, even a single other dhamma by which unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline, as does this, bhikkhus: inappropriate attention [ayoniso manasikāra].

1.2Ayoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one attending inappropriately [ayoniso manasikāra], bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Chaṭṭhaṁ.

“I do not see, bhikkhus, even a single other dhamma by which unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline, as does this, bhikkhus: appropriate attention [yoniso manasikāra].

1.2Yoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one attending with appropriate attention [yoniso manasikāra], bhikkhus, unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Sattamaṁ.

“I do not see, bhikkhus, even a single other dhamma by which unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline, as does this, bhikkhus: lack of full awareness [asampajaññaṁ].

1.2Asampajānassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one without full awareness [sampajānā], bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Aṭṭhamaṁ.

1.2Sampajānassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one with full awareness [sampajānā], bhikkhus, unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline.”

1.3Navamaṁ.

“I do not see, bhikkhus, even a single other dhamma by which unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline, as does this, bhikkhus: bad friendship.

1.2Pāpamittassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one with bad friends, bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline.”
