1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā vā akusalā dhammā parihāyanti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, kalyāṇamittatā.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single dhamma by which unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline, as does, bhikkhus, good friendship.

1.2Kalyāṇamittassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

For one with a good friend, bhikkhus, unarisen wholesome dhammas arise and arisen unwholesome dhammas decline."

1.2Anuyogā, bhikkhave, akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ, ananuyogā kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantī”ti.

Through devotion to unwholesome dhammas and non-devotion to wholesome dhammas, bhikkhus, unarisen unwholesome dhammas arise and arisen wholesome dhammas decline."

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā bojjhaṅgā nuppajjanti uppannā vā bojjhaṅgā na bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, ayonisomanasikāro.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single dhamma by which unarisen bojjhaṅgas do not arise and arisen bojjhaṅgas do not reach full development [bhāvanā], as does, bhikkhus, inappropriate attention [ayonisomanasikāro].

1.2Ayoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva bojjhaṅgā nuppajjanti uppannā ca bojjhaṅgā na bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchantī”ti.

For one attending inappropriately [ayoniso manasi karoto], bhikkhus, unarisen bojjhaṅgas do not arise and arisen bojjhaṅgas do not reach full development [bhāvanā]."

1.3Catutthaṁ.

The fourth.

1.1“Nāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aññaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā bojjhaṅgā uppajjanti uppannā vā bojjhaṅgā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchanti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, yonisomanasikāro.

"I do not see, bhikkhus, any other single dhamma by which unarisen bojjhaṅgas arise and arisen bojjhaṅgas reach full development [bhāvanā], as does, bhikkhus, appropriate attention [yonisomanasikāro].

1.2Yoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva bojjhaṅgā uppajjanti uppannā ca bojjhaṅgā bhāvanāpāripūriṁ gacchantī”ti.

For one attending appropriately [yoniso manasi karoto], bhikkhus, unarisen bojjhaṅgas arise and arisen bojjhaṅgas reach full development [bhāvanā]."

1.3Pañcamaṁ.

The fifth.

"This is a trifling decline, bhikkhus — the decline of relatives.

1.2Etaṁ patikiṭṭhaṁ, bhikkhave, parihānīnaṁ yadidaṁ paññāparihānī”ti.

This is the worst of declines, bhikkhus — the decline of discernment [paññā]."

1.3Chaṭṭhaṁ.

The sixth.

1.1“Appamattikā esā, bhikkhave, vuddhi yadidaṁ ñātivuddhi.

"This is a trifling growth, bhikkhus — the growth of relatives.

1.2Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, vuddhīnaṁ yadidaṁ paññāvuddhi.

This is the foremost of growths, bhikkhus — the growth of discernment [paññā].

1.3Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ:

Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus:

1.4‘paññāvuddhiyā vaddhissāmā’ti.

'We will grow in discernment [paññā].'

1.5Evañhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabban”ti.

For that is how you should train yourselves, bhikkhus."

1.6Sattamaṁ.

This is the worst of declines, bhikkhus — the decline of discernment [paññā]."

1.3Aṭṭhamaṁ.

This is the worst of declines, bhikkhus — the decline of discernment [paññā]."

This is the foremost of growths, bhikkhus — the growth of discernment [paññā].

1.3Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ:

Therefore, bhikkhus, you should train yourselves thus:

1.4‘paññāvuddhiyā vaddhissāmā’ti.
