1.1"There are two hopes, bhikkhus, that are hard to abandon.

1.3Lābhāsā ca jīvitāsā ca.

1.3The hope for gain and the hope for life.

1.4Imā kho, bhikkhave, dve āsā duppajahā”ti.

1.4These, bhikkhus, are the two hopes that are hard to abandon."

1.1"There are two persons, bhikkhus, who are rare in the world.

1.2Which two?

1.3Yo ca pubbakārī, yo ca kataññū katavedī.

1.3One who acts first on another's behalf, and one who is grateful and acknowledges what has been done.

1.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve puggalā dullabhā lokasmin”ti.

1.4These, bhikkhus, are the two persons who are rare in the world."
