1.1“Dveme, bhikkhave, bālā.
"There are these two fools, bhikkhus.
1.2Katame dve?
Which two?
1.3Yo ca accayaṁ accayato na passati, yo ca accayaṁ desentassa yathādhammaṁ nappaṭiggaṇhāti.
One who does not see a transgression as a transgression, and one who does not accept, in accordance with the dhamma, the confession of a transgression by the one confessing it.
1.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve bālāti.
These are the two fools, bhikkhus.
2.1Dveme, bhikkhave, paṇḍitā.
There are these two wise ones, bhikkhus.
2.2Katame dve?
Which two?
2.3Yo ca accayaṁ accayato passati, yo ca accayaṁ desentassa yathādhammaṁ paṭiggaṇhāti.
One who sees a transgression as a transgression, and one who accepts, in accordance with the dhamma, the confession of a transgression by the one confessing it.
2.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve paṇḍitā”ti.
These are the two wise ones, bhikkhus."

1.1“Dveme, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhanti.
"There are these two who misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus.
1.2Katame dve?
Which two?
1.3Duṭṭho vā dosantaro, saddho vā duggahitena.
One who is malicious, with hatred within, and one who is faithful but with a wrong grasp.
1.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhantī”ti.
These are the two who misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus."

"There are these two who misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus.
1.2Katame dve?

1.3Yo ca abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatena bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti, yo ca bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatena abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti.
One who presents what was not said or spoken by the Tathāgata as having been said and spoken by the Tathāgata, and one who presents what was said and spoken by the Tathāgata as not having been said or spoken by the Tathāgata.
1.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhantīti.
These are the two who misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus.
2.1Dveme, bhikkhave, tathāgataṁ nābbhācikkhanti.
There are these two who do not misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus.
2.2Katame dve?
Which two?
2.3Yo ca abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatena abhāsitaṁ alapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti, yo ca bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatena bhāsitaṁ lapitaṁ tathāgatenāti dīpeti.
One who presents what was not said or spoken by the Tathāgata as not having been said or spoken by the Tathāgata, and one who presents what was said and spoken by the Tathāgata as having been said and spoken by the Tathāgata.
2.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ nābbhācikkhantī”ti.
These are the two who do not misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus."

1.3Yo ca neyyatthaṁ suttantaṁ nītattho suttantoti dīpeti, yo ca nītatthaṁ suttantaṁ neyyattho suttantoti dīpeti.
One who presents a sutta whose meaning requires interpretation as one whose meaning is definitive, and one who presents a sutta whose meaning is definitive as one whose meaning requires interpretation.
1.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ abbhācikkhantī”ti.
These are the two who misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus."

"There are these two who do not misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus.
1.2Katame dve?
Which two?
1.3Yo ca neyyatthaṁ suttantaṁ neyyattho suttantoti dīpeti, yo ca nītatthaṁ suttantaṁ nītattho suttantoti dīpeti.
One who presents a sutta whose meaning requires interpretation as one whose meaning requires interpretation, and one who presents a sutta whose meaning is definitive as one whose meaning is definitive.
1.4Ime kho, bhikkhave, dve tathāgataṁ nābbhācikkhantī”ti.
These are the two who do not misrepresent the Tathāgata, bhikkhus."

1.1“Paṭicchannakammantassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—
"For one of concealed deeds, bhikkhus, one of two destinations is to be expected—
1.2nirayo vā tiracchānayoni vāti.
hell or the animal realm.
2.1Appaṭicchannakammantassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—
For one of unconcealed deeds, bhikkhus, one of two destinations is to be expected—
2.2devā vā manussā vā”ti.
the deities or humans."

1.1“Micchādiṭṭhikassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—
"For one of wrong view, bhikkhus, one of two destinations is to be expected—
1.2nirayo vā tiracchānayoni vā”ti.
hell or the animal realm."

1.1“Sammādiṭṭhikassa, bhikkhave, dvinnaṁ gatīnaṁ aññatarā gati pāṭikaṅkhā—
"For one of right view, bhikkhus, one of two destinations is to be expected—
1.2devā vā manussā vā”ti.

"For the unvirtuous, bhikkhus, two places await—
1.2nirayo vā tiracchānayoni vā.
hell or the animal realm.
2.1Sīlavato, bhikkhave, dve paṭiggāhā—
For the virtuous, bhikkhus, two places await—
2.2devā vā manussā vā”ti.
the deities or humans."

1.1“Dvāhaṁ, bhikkhave, atthavase sampassamāno araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevāmi.
"Seeing two reasons, bhikkhus, I resort to remote lodgings in forests and wilds.
1.2Katame dve?
Which two?
1.3Attano ca diṭṭhadhammasukhavihāraṁ sampassamāno, pacchimañca janataṁ anukampamāno.
Seeing a pleasant abiding in the present for myself, and out of compassion for future generations.
1.4Ime kho ahaṁ, bhikkhave, dve atthavase sampassamāno araññavanapatthāni pantāni senāsanāni paṭisevāmī”ti.
Seeing these two reasons, bhikkhus, I resort to remote lodgings in forests and wilds."

1.1“Dve me, bhikkhave, dhammā vijjābhāgiyā.
"There are these two dhammas, bhikkhus, that are conducive to knowledge.
1.2Katame dve?
Which two?
1.3Samatho ca vipassanā ca.
Settling [samatha] and vipassanā.
1.4Samatho, bhikkhave, bhāvito kamatthamanubhoti?
What does settling [samatha], bhikkhus, when developed, lead to?
1.5Cittaṁ bhāvīyati.
The mind [citta] is developed.
1.6Cittaṁ bhāvitaṁ kamatthamanubhoti?
What does the mind [citta], when developed, lead to?
1.7Yo rāgo so pahīyati.
Whatever passion there is, that is abandoned.
1.8Vipassanā, bhikkhave, bhāvitā kamatthamanubhoti?
What does vipassanā, bhikkhus, when developed, lead to?
1.9Paññā bhāvīyati.
Discernment [paññā] is developed.
1.10Paññā bhāvitā kamatthamanubhoti?
What does discernment [paññā], when developed, lead to?
1.11Yā avijjā sā pahīyati.
Whatever blindness [avijjā] there is, that is abandoned.
1.12Rāgupakkiliṭṭhaṁ vā, bhikkhave, cittaṁ na vimuccati, avijjupakkiliṭṭhā vā paññā na bhāvīyati.
A mind [citta] defiled by passion, bhikkhus, is not liberated, and discernment [paññā] defiled by blindness [avijjā] is not developed.
1.13Iti kho, bhikkhave, rāgavirāgā cetovimutti, avijjāvirāgā paññāvimuttī”ti.
Thus, bhikkhus, through the fading away of passion comes liberation of mind [cetovimutti], and through the fading away of blindness [avijjā] comes liberation through discernment [paññāvimutti]."
