Two Brahmins (2nd)
1.1Atha kho dve brāhmaṇā jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayoanuppattā vīsavassasatikā jātiyā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te brāhmaṇā bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:
Then two brahmins — old, aged, elderly, advanced in years, having reached the final stage of life, a hundred and twenty years old by birth — approached the Bhagavā, and having approached, they paid homage to the Bhagavā and sat to one side. Sitting to one side, those two brahmins said this to the Bhagavā:
1.2“mayamassu, bho gotama, brāhmaṇā jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayoanuppattā vīsavassasatikā jātiyā;
"We, good Gotama, are brahmins — old, aged, elderly, advanced in years, having reached the final stage of life, a hundred and twenty years old by birth;
1.3te camhā akatakalyāṇā akatakusalā akatabhīruttāṇā.
and we have not done good, not done wholesome deeds, not done what gives protection from fear.
1.4Ovadatu no bhavaṁ gotamo, anusāsatu no bhavaṁ gotamo yaṁ amhākaṁ assa dīgharattaṁ hitāya sukhāyā”ti.
May good Gotama advise us, may good Gotama instruct us, for our long-lasting welfare and happiness."
2.1“Taggha tumhe, brāhmaṇā, jiṇṇā vuddhā mahallakā addhagatā vayoanuppattā vīsavassasatikā jātiyā;
"Indeed, brahmins, you are old, aged, elderly, advanced in years, having reached the final stage of life, a hundred and twenty years old by birth;
2.2te cattha akatakalyāṇā akatakusalā akatabhīruttāṇā.
and you have not done good, not done wholesome deeds, not done what gives protection from fear.
2.3Āditto kho ayaṁ, brāhmaṇā, loko jarāya byādhinā maraṇena.
This world, brahmins, is on fire with old age, sickness, and death.
2.4Evaṁ āditte kho, brāhmaṇā, loke jarāya byādhinā maraṇena, yo idha kāyena saṁyamo vācāya saṁyamo manasā saṁyamo, taṁ tassa petassa tāṇañca leṇañca dīpañca saraṇañca parāyaṇañcāti.
When the world is thus on fire, brahmins, with old age, sickness, and death, whatever restraint of body, restraint of speech, and restraint of mind there is here — that is one's protection, refuge, island, shelter, and refuge hereafter when one has passed away."
3.1Ādittasmiṁ agārasmiṁ,
When a house is ablaze,
3.2yaṁ nīharati bhājanaṁ;
whatever vessel one carries out —
3.3Taṁ tassa hoti atthāya,
that is of benefit to oneself,
3.4no ca yaṁ tattha ḍayhati.
not what burns there inside.
4.1Evaṁ āditto kho loko,
So too this world is ablaze
4.2jarāya maraṇena ca;
with old age and with death;
4.3Nīharetheva dānena,
carry out by giving —
4.4dinnaṁ hoti sunīhataṁ.
what is given is well carried out.
5.1Yodha kāyena saṁyamo,
Whatever restraint of body here,
5.2Vācāya uda cetasā;
of speech, and also of mind —
5.3Taṁ tassa petassa sukhāya hoti,
that is for the happiness of one who has passed away:
5.4Yaṁ jīvamāno pakaroti puññan”ti.
the merit one performs while still alive.
