A Certain Brahmin
1.1Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then a certain brahmin approached the Bhagavā, and having approached, exchanged greetings with the Bhagavā … Seated to one side, that brahmin said this to the Bhagavā:
1.2“‘sandiṭṭhiko dhammo sandiṭṭhiko dhammo’ti, bho gotama, vuccati.
"'The dhamma is directly visible, the dhamma is directly visible,' so it is said, Master Gotama.
1.3Kittāvatā nu kho, bho gotama, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī”ti?
In what way, Master Gotama, is the dhamma directly visible, immediate, of the nature 'come and see,' leading onward, to be personally experienced by the wise?"
2.1“Ratto kho, brāhmaṇa, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.
"One inflamed by passion, brahmin, overcome by passion, with mind [citta] consumed, intends harm to themselves, intends harm to others, intends harm to both, and experiences mental dukkha and grief.
2.2Rāge pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.
With passion abandoned, they neither intend harm to themselves, nor intend harm to others, nor intend harm to both, nor experience mental dukkha and grief.
2.3Ratto kho …pe… kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati.
One inflamed … conducts themselves in wrong conduct by body, conducts themselves in wrong conduct by speech, conducts themselves in wrong conduct by mind.
2.4Rāge pahīne neva kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, na vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, na manasā duccaritaṁ carati.
With passion abandoned, they neither conduct themselves in wrong conduct by body, nor conduct themselves in wrong conduct by speech, nor conduct themselves in wrong conduct by mind.
2.5Ratto kho …pe… attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.
One inflamed … does not know their own good as it truly is, does not know the good of others as it truly is, does not know the good of both as it truly is.
2.6Rāge pahīne attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.
With passion abandoned, they know their own good as it truly is, know the good of others as it truly is, know the good of both as it truly is.
2.7Evampi kho, brāhmaṇa, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti …pe….
In this way too, brahmin, the dhamma is directly visible ….
3.1Duṭṭho kho, brāhmaṇa, dosena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.
One corrupted by hatred, brahmin, overcome by hatred, with mind [citta] consumed, intends harm to themselves, intends harm to others, intends harm to both, and experiences mental dukkha and grief.
3.2Dose pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.
With hatred abandoned, they neither intend harm to themselves, nor intend harm to others, nor intend harm to both, nor experience mental dukkha and grief.
3.3Evampi kho, brāhmaṇa, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti …pe….
In this way too, brahmin, the dhamma is directly visible ….
4.1Mūḷho kho, brāhmaṇa, mohena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.
One deluded by delusion, brahmin, overcome by delusion, with mind [citta] consumed, intends harm to themselves, intends harm to others, intends harm to both, and experiences mental dukkha and grief.
4.2Mohe pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.
With delusion abandoned, they neither intend harm to themselves, nor intend harm to others, nor intend harm to both, nor experience mental dukkha and grief.
4.3Evaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī”ti.
In this way, brahmin, the dhamma is directly visible, immediate, of the nature 'come and see,' leading onward, to be personally experienced by the wise."
5.1“Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama, abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama.
"Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama!
5.2Seyyathāpi, bho gotama, nikkujjitaṁ vā ukkujjeyya, paṭicchannaṁ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaṁ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaṁ dhāreyya: ‘cakkhumanto rūpāni dakkhantī’ti; evamevaṁ bhotā gotamena anekapariyāyena dhammo pakāsito.
Just as, Master Gotama, one might set upright what has been overturned, or reveal what is hidden, or point out the path to one who is lost, or hold a lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes can see forms — in just the same way the dhamma has been made clear by Master Gotama in countless ways.
5.3Esāhaṁ bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhusaṅghañca.
I go for refuge to Master Gotama, to the dhamma, and to the saṅgha of bhikkhus.
5.4Upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
May Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge from this day forward for as long as life lasts."
