0.3Paribbājakasutta

The Wanderer

1.1Atha kho aññataro brāhmaṇaparibbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so brāhmaṇaparibbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

Then a certain brahmin wanderer approached the Bhagavā; having approached … he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, that brahmin wanderer said this to the Bhagavā:

1.2“‘sandiṭṭhiko dhammo sandiṭṭhiko dhammo’ti, bho gotama, vuccati.

"'The dhamma is visible here and now, the dhamma is visible here and now,' it is said, Master Gotama.

1.3Kittāvatā nu kho, bho gotama, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti akāliko ehipassiko opaneyyiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī”ti?

In what way, Master Gotama, is the dhamma visible here and now, immediate, inviting one to come and see, leading onwards, to be known by the wise each for themselves?"

2.1“Ratto kho, brāhmaṇa, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

"When one is inflamed by passion, brahmin, overcome by passion, their mind [citta] consumed, they intend harm to themselves, they intend harm to others, they intend harm to both; and they experience mental dukkha and dejection.

2.2Rāge pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

When passion is abandoned, they no longer intend harm to themselves, no longer intend harm to others, no longer intend harm to both; and they no longer experience mental dukkha and dejection.

3.1Ratto kho, brāhmaṇa, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati.

When one is inflamed by passion, brahmin, overcome by passion, their mind [citta] consumed, they conduct themselves badly in body, badly in speech, badly in mind.

3.2Rāge pahīne neva kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, na vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, na manasā duccaritaṁ carati.

When passion is abandoned, they no longer conduct themselves badly in body, no longer badly in speech, no longer badly in mind.

4.1Ratto kho, brāhmaṇa, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ nappajānāti.

When one is inflamed by passion, brahmin, overcome by passion, their mind [citta] consumed, they do not know their own good as it truly is, they do not know another's good as it truly is, they do not know the good of both as it truly is.

4.2Rāge pahīne attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

When passion is abandoned, they know their own good as it truly is, they know another's good as it truly is, they know the good of both as it truly is.

4.3Evampi kho, brāhmaṇa, sandiṭṭhiko dhammo hoti …pe….

In this way too, brahmin, the dhamma is visible here and now …

5.1Duṭṭho kho, brāhmaṇa, dosena …pe…

When one is corrupted by hatred, brahmin …

5.2mūḷho kho, brāhmaṇa, mohena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

when one is deluded by delusion, brahmin, overcome by delusion, their mind [citta] consumed, they intend harm to themselves, they intend harm to others, they intend harm to both; and they experience mental dukkha and dejection.

5.3Mohe pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

When delusion is abandoned, they no longer intend harm to themselves, no longer intend harm to others, no longer intend harm to both; and they no longer experience mental dukkha and dejection.

6.1Mūḷho kho, brāhmaṇa, mohena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto, kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, manasā duccaritaṁ carati.

When one is deluded by delusion, brahmin, overcome by delusion, their mind [citta] consumed, they conduct themselves badly in body, badly in speech, badly in mind.

6.2Mohe pahīne neva kāyena duccaritaṁ carati, na vācāya duccaritaṁ carati, na manasā duccaritaṁ carati.

When one is deluded by delusion, brahmin, overcome by delusion, their mind [citta] consumed, they do not know their own good as it truly is, they do not know another's good as it truly is, they do not know the good of both as it truly is.

7.2Mohe pahīne attatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, paratthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti, ubhayatthampi yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.

8.2upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

May Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge from this day forth, for as long as life lasts."
