1.1Atha kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

Then the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi approached the Bhagavā, and having approached, paid homage to the Bhagavā and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi said this to the Bhagavā:

1.2“‘sandiṭṭhikaṁ nibbānaṁ sandiṭṭhikaṁ nibbānan’ti, bho gotama, vuccati.

"'Nibbāna visible in this very life, nibbāna visible in this very life' — so it is said, Master Gotama.

1.3Kittāvatā nu kho, bho gotama, sandiṭṭhikaṁ nibbānaṁ hoti akālikaṁ ehipassikaṁ opaneyyikaṁ paccattaṁ veditabbaṁ viññūhī”ti?

In what way, Master Gotama, is nibbāna visible in this very life, immediate, inviting one to come and see, leading onward, to be personally experienced by the wise?"

2.1Ratto kho, brāhmaṇa, rāgena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

When one is inflamed by passion, brahmin — overcome by passion, with mind [citta] seized — one intends harm to oneself, one intends harm to others, one intends harm to both; and one experiences mental dukkha and grief.

2.2Rāge pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

When passion is abandoned, one no longer intends harm to oneself, no longer intends harm to others, no longer intends harm to both; and one no longer experiences mental dukkha and grief.

2.3Evampi kho, brāhmaṇa, sandiṭṭhikaṁ nibbānaṁ hoti.

In this way, brahmin, nibbāna is visible in this very life.

3.1Duṭṭho kho, brāhmaṇa …pe…

When one is corrupted by hatred, brahmin …

3.2mūḷho kho, brāhmaṇa, mohena abhibhūto pariyādinnacitto attabyābādhāyapi ceteti, parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, cetasikampi dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

When one is deluded, brahmin — overcome by delusion, with mind [citta] seized — one intends harm to oneself, one intends harm to others, one intends harm to both; and one experiences mental dukkha and grief.

3.3Mohe pahīne nevattabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na parabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na ubhayabyābādhāyapi ceteti, na cetasikaṁ dukkhaṁ domanassaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti.

When delusion is abandoned, one no longer intends harm to oneself, no longer intends harm to others, no longer intends harm to both; and one no longer experiences mental dukkha and grief.

3.4Evampi kho, brāhmaṇa, sandiṭṭhikaṁ nibbānaṁ hoti.

In this way, brahmin, nibbāna is visible in this very life.

4.1Yato kho ayaṁ, brāhmaṇa, anavasesaṁ rāgakkhayaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti, anavasesaṁ dosakkhayaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti, anavasesaṁ mohakkhayaṁ paṭisaṁvedeti;

When, brahmin, one experiences the complete destruction of passion, the complete destruction of hatred, the complete destruction of delusion —

4.2evaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, sandiṭṭhikaṁ nibbānaṁ hoti akālikaṁ ehipassikaṁ opaneyyikaṁ paccattaṁ veditabbaṁ viññūhī”ti.

in this way, brahmin, nibbāna is visible in this very life, immediate, inviting one to come and see, leading onward, to be personally experienced by the wise."

5.1“Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…

"Excellent, Master Gotama …

5.2upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.

May Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge from this day forth for as long as life lasts."
