With Vacchagotta
1.1Atha kho vacchagotto paribbājako yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ sammodi.
Then the wanderer Vacchagotta approached the Bhagavā; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Bhagavā.
1.2Sammodanīyaṁ kathaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ vītisāretvā ekamantaṁ nisīdi. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho vacchagotto paribbājako bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Having exchanged courteous and memorable greetings, he sat to one side. Seated to one side, the wanderer Vacchagotta said this to the Bhagavā:
1.3“sutaṁ metaṁ, bho gotama, samaṇo gotamo evamāha:
"I have heard this, Master Gotama, that the ascetic Gotama says:
1.4‘mayhameva dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ;
'Gifts should be given to me alone, not to others;
1.5mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ;
gifts should be given to my disciples alone, not to other disciples;
1.6mayhameva dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ;
what is given to me alone bears great fruit, not what is given to others;
1.7mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalan’ti.
what is given to my disciples alone bears great fruit, not what is given to other disciples.'
1.8Ye te, bho gotama, evamāhaṁsu ‘samaṇo gotamo evamāha:
Those who say this, Master Gotama — 'The ascetic Gotama says:
1.9“mayhameva dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ.
"Gifts should be given to me alone, not to others.
1.10Mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dānaṁ dātabbaṁ.
Gifts should be given to my disciples alone, not to other disciples.
1.11Mayhameva dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ.
What is given to me alone bears great fruit, not what is given to others.
1.12Mayhameva sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ, nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalan”’ti.
What is given to my disciples alone bears great fruit, not what is given to other disciples"' —
1.13Kacci te bhoto gotamassa vuttavādino na ca bhavantaṁ gotamaṁ abhūtena abbhācikkhanti, dhammassa cānudhammaṁ byākaronti, na ca koci sahadhammiko vādānupāto gārayhaṁ ṭhānaṁ āgacchati?
do they report what was actually said by Master Gotama? Do they not misrepresent Master Gotama with what is false and untrue? Do they explain in accordance with the dhamma, and does no legitimate consequence of their assertion lead to a blameworthy position?
1.14Anabbhakkhātukāmā hi mayaṁ bhavantaṁ gotaman”ti.
For we have no wish to misrepresent Master Gotama."
2.1“Ye te, vaccha, evamāhaṁsu:
"Those who say this, Vaccha:
2.2‘samaṇo gotamo evamāha:
'The ascetic Gotama says:
2.3“mayhameva dānaṁ dātabbaṁ …pe…
"Gifts should be given to me alone …
2.4nāññesaṁ sāvakānaṁ dinnaṁ mahapphalan”’ti
not what is given to other disciples"' —
2.5na me te vuttavādino. Abbhācikkhanti ca pana maṁ asatā abhūtena.
they do not report what was said by me. They misrepresent me with what is false and untrue.
2.6Yo kho, vaccha, paraṁ dānaṁ dadantaṁ vāreti so tiṇṇaṁ antarāyakaro hoti, tiṇṇaṁ pāripanthiko.
Whoever, Vaccha, prevents another from giving makes himself an obstacle to three things, an obstructer of three.
2.7Katamesaṁ tiṇṇaṁ?
Which three?
2.8Dāyakassa puññantarāyakaro hoti, paṭiggāhakānaṁ lābhantarāyakaro hoti, pubbeva kho panassa attā khato ca hoti upahato ca.
He makes himself an obstacle to the merit of the donor, an obstacle to the gains of the recipients, and before all else, he has already wounded and harmed himself.
2.9Yo kho, vaccha, paraṁ dānaṁ dadantaṁ vāreti so imesaṁ tiṇṇaṁ antarāyakaro hoti, tiṇṇaṁ pāripanthiko.
Whoever, Vaccha, prevents another from giving makes himself an obstacle to these three things, an obstructer of three.
3.1Ahaṁ kho pana, vaccha, evaṁ vadāmi:
But this is what I say, Vaccha:
3.2‘ye hi te candanikāya vā oligalle vā pāṇā, tatrapi yo thālidhovanaṁ vā sarāvadhovanaṁ vā chaḍḍeti:
'Even for the creatures living in a gutter or a drain — when someone throws away the rinsings of a pot or a bowl there,
3.3“ye tattha pāṇā te tena yāpentū”’ti, tato nidānampāhaṁ, vaccha, puññassa āgamaṁ vadāmi.
"may the creatures there be sustained by this" — even from that, Vaccha, I say merit accrues.'
3.4Ko pana vādo manussabhūte.
How much more so when it comes to human beings.
3.5Api cāhaṁ, vaccha, sīlavato dinnaṁ mahapphalaṁ vadāmi, no tathā dussīlassa, so ca hoti pañcaṅgavippahīno pañcaṅgasamannāgato.
And yet, Vaccha, I say that what is given to a virtuous person bears great fruit — not so with one of poor virtue — and that person has abandoned five factors and is endowed with five factors.
4.1Katamāni pañcaṅgāni pahīnāni honti?
Which five factors have been abandoned?
4.2Kāmacchando pahīno hoti, byāpādo pahīno hoti, thinamiddhaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti, uddhaccakukkuccaṁ pahīnaṁ hoti, vicikicchā pahīnā hoti.
Sensual desire has been abandoned, ill will has been abandoned, sloth-and-torpor has been abandoned, restlessness-and-worry has been abandoned, doubt has been abandoned.
4.3Imāni pañcaṅgāni vippahīnāni honti.
These five factors have been abandoned.
5.1Katamehi pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgato hoti?
And with which five factors is he endowed?
5.2Asekkhena sīlakkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena samādhikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena paññākkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttikkhandhena samannāgato hoti, asekkhena vimuttiñāṇadassanakkhandhena samannāgato hoti;
He is endowed with the aggregate of virtue of one beyond training, endowed with the aggregate of samādhi of one beyond training, endowed with the aggregate of discernment [paññā] of one beyond training, endowed with the aggregate of liberation of one beyond training, endowed with the aggregate of the knowledge and vision of liberation of one beyond training;
5.3imehi pañcahi aṅgehi samannāgato hoti.
he is endowed with these five factors.
5.4Iti pañcaṅgavippahīne pañcaṅgasamannāgate dinnaṁ mahapphalanti vadāmīti.
Thus I say: what is given to one who has abandoned five factors and is endowed with five factors bears great fruit.
6.1Iti kaṇhāsu setāsu,
Among black cows and white cows,
6.2rohiṇīsu harīsu vā;
tawny ones and dun ones,
6.3Kammāsāsu sarūpāsu,
spotted ones and those of uniform color,
6.4gosu pārevatāsu vā.
or cows of dove-grey hue —
7.1Yāsu kāsuci etāsu,
among whichever of these
7.2danto jāyati puṅgavo;
a tamed bull is born,
7.3Dhorayho balasampanno,
fit to carry loads, endowed with strength,
7.4kalyāṇajavanikkamo;
of fine speed and stride —
7.5Tameva bhāre yuñjanti,
it is that one they yoke to the burden;
7.6nāssa vaṇṇaṁ parikkhare.
they do not pass it over on account of its color.
8.1Evamevaṁ manussesu,
Just so among human beings,
8.2yasmiṁ kasmiñci jātiye;
whatever their birth may be —
8.3Khattiye brāhmaṇe vesse,
noble, brahmin, or merchant,
8.4sudde caṇḍālapukkuse.
serf, outcaste, or street-sweeper —
9.1Yāsu kāsuci etāsu,
among whichever of these
9.2danto jāyati subbato;
one of good conduct is born, tamed,
9.3Dhammaṭṭho sīlasampanno,
established in dhamma, endowed with virtue,
9.4saccavādī hirīmano.
truthful and conscientious —
10.1Pahīnajātimaraṇo,
with birth and death abandoned,
10.2brahmacariyassa kevalī;
the holy life fulfilled,
10.3Pannabhāro visaṁyutto,
the burden laid down, freed from bonds,
10.4katakicco anāsavo.
the task done, with no āsavas —
11.1Pāragū sabbadhammānaṁ,
gone beyond all dhammas,
11.2anupādāya nibbuto;
quenched without clinging [upādāna] —
11.3Tasmiṁyeva viraje khette,
in that very spotless field
11.4vipulā hoti dakkhiṇā.
the offering bears abundant fruit.
12.1Bālā ca avijānantā,
But fools, not understanding,
12.2dummedhā assutāvino;
of poor wisdom and without learning,
12.3Bahiddhā denti dānāni,
give their gifts to those outside
12.4na hi sante upāsare.
and do not attend on the good.
13.1Ye ca sante upāsanti,
Those who attend on the good,
13.2sappaññe dhīrasammate;
on the wise, honored by the steadfast,
13.3Saddhā ca nesaṁ sugate,
whose faith in the Well-Gone One
13.4mūlajātā patiṭṭhitā.
has arisen, rooted and established —
14.1Devalokañca te yanti,
they go to the realm of the gods,
14.2kule vā idha jāyare;
or are reborn here in a good family;
14.3Anupubbena nibbānaṁ,
and gradually to nibbāna
14.4adhigacchanti paṇḍitā”ti.
the wise attain."
