With Jāṇussoṇi
1.1Atha kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavatā saddhiṁ …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:
Then the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi approached the Bhagavā; having approached, he … sat to one side. Seated to one side, the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi said this to the Bhagavā:
1.2“yassassu, bho gotama, yañño vā saddhaṁ vā thālipāko vā deyyadhammaṁ vā, tevijjesu brāhmaṇesu dānaṁ dadeyyā”ti.
"Master Gotama, whoever might give a gift — whether from a sacrifice, a memorial offering, a dish-offering, or a gift-worthy matter — should give it to brahmins of the three knowledges."
1.3“Yathā kathaṁ pana, brāhmaṇa, brāhmaṇā tevijjaṁ paññapentī”ti?
"But how, brahmin, do brahmins designate one who has the three knowledges?"
1.4“Idha kho, bho gotama, brāhmaṇo ubhato sujāto hoti mātito ca pitito ca saṁsuddhagahaṇiko yāva sattamā pitāmahayugā akkhitto anupakkuṭṭho jātivādena, ajjhāyako mantadharo, tiṇṇaṁ vedānaṁ pāragū sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaṁ sākkharappabhedānaṁ itihāsapañcamānaṁ, padako, veyyākaraṇo, lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayoti.
"Here, Master Gotama, a brahmin is well-born on both sides, from mother and father, of pure lineage for seven generations of ancestors, unchallenged and unimpeached in terms of birth; a reciter, a bearer of sacred hymns; a master of the three Vedas together with their vocabularies, ritual texts, phonology, and history as the fifth — skilled in metre, in grammar, and proficient in natural philosophy and the marks of a great man.
1.5Evaṁ kho, bho gotama, brāhmaṇā tevijjaṁ paññapentī”ti.
In this way, Master Gotama, brahmins designate one who has the three knowledges."
2.1“Aññathā kho, brāhmaṇa, brāhmaṇā brāhmaṇaṁ tevijjaṁ paññapenti, aññathā ca pana ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hotī”ti.
"It is one thing, brahmin, for brahmins to designate a brahmin as one of the three knowledges, and another to have the three knowledges in the vinaya of the noble ones."
2.2“Yathā kathaṁ pana, bho gotama, ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hoti?
"But how, Master Gotama, does one have the three knowledges in the vinaya of the noble ones?
2.3Sādhu me bhavaṁ gotamo tathā dhammaṁ desetu yathā ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hotī”ti.
Sādhu, Master Gotama — would that you teach the dhamma in such a way as to show how one has the three knowledges in the vinaya of the noble ones."
2.4“Tena hi, brāhmaṇa, suṇāhi, sādhukaṁ manasi karohi; bhāsissāmī”ti.
"Well then, brahmin, listen and pay close attention; I will speak."
2.5“Evaṁ, bho”ti kho jāṇussoṇi brāhmaṇo bhagavato paccassosi.
"Yes, sir," the brahmin Jāṇussoṇi replied to the Bhagavā.
2.6Bhagavā etadavoca:
The Bhagavā said this:
3.1“Idha pana, brāhmaṇa, bhikkhu vivicceva kāmehi …pe…
"Here, brahmin, a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures …
3.2catutthaṁ jhānaṁ upasampajja viharati.
enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna.
4.1So evaṁ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte pubbenivāsānussatiñāṇāya cittaṁ abhininnāmeti.
With his mind [citta] thus endowed with samādhi, pure, bright, unblemished, free from corruption, malleable, wieldy, steady, and having attained imperturbability, he directs his mind [citta] to the knowledge of recollecting past abodes.
4.2So anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati, seyyathidaṁ—ekampi jātiṁ dvepi jātiyo …pe… iti sākāraṁ sauddesaṁ anekavihitaṁ pubbenivāsaṁ anussarati.
He recollects many kinds of past abodes — namely: one birth, two births … — thus, with their aspects and particulars, he recollects many kinds of past abodes.
4.3Ayamassa paṭhamā vijjā adhigatā hoti;
This is his first knowledge attained;
4.4avijjā vihatā, vijjā uppannā; tamo vihato, āloko uppanno yathā taṁ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato.
blindness [avijjā] is destroyed, knowledge has arisen; darkness is destroyed, light has arisen — as it comes to one who dwells diligent, ardent, and resolute.
5.1So evaṁ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte sattānaṁ cutūpapātañāṇāya cittaṁ abhininnāmeti.
With his mind [citta] thus endowed with samādhi, pure, bright, unblemished, free from corruption, malleable, wieldy, steady, and having attained imperturbability, he directs his mind [citta] to the knowledge of the passing away and reappearance of beings.
5.2So dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena …pe… yathākammūpage satte pajānāti.
With the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human … he understands beings according to their kamma.
5.3Ayamassa dutiyā vijjā adhigatā hoti;
This is his second knowledge attained;
5.4avijjā vihatā, vijjā uppannā; tamo vihato, āloko uppanno yathā taṁ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharato.
blindness [avijjā] is destroyed, knowledge has arisen; darkness is destroyed, light has arisen — as it comes to one who dwells diligent, ardent, and resolute.
6.1So evaṁ samāhite citte parisuddhe pariyodāte anaṅgaṇe vigatūpakkilese mudubhūte kammaniye ṭhite āneñjappatte āsavānaṁ khayañāṇāya cittaṁ abhininnāmeti.
With his mind [citta] thus endowed with samādhi, pure, bright, unblemished, free from corruption, malleable, wieldy, steady, and having attained imperturbability, he directs his mind [citta] to the knowledge of the destruction of the āsavas.
6.2So ‘idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti …pe… ‘ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti;
He understands as it truly is: 'This is dukkha' … 'This is the path leading to the cessation of dukkha' he understands as it truly is;
6.3‘ime āsavā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti …pe… ‘ayaṁ āsavanirodhagāminī paṭipadā’ti yathābhūtaṁ pajānāti.
'These are the āsavas' he understands as it truly is … 'This is the path leading to the cessation of the āsavas' he understands as it truly is.
6.4Tassa evaṁ jānato evaṁ passato kāmāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, bhavāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati, avijjāsavāpi cittaṁ vimuccati;
Knowing thus, seeing thus, his mind [citta] is liberated from the āsava of sensual desire, from the āsava of existence, and from the āsava of blindness [avijjā];
6.5vimuttasmiṁ vimuttamiti ñāṇaṁ hoti.
when liberated, there arises the knowledge: 'Liberated.'
6.6‘Khīṇā jāti, vusitaṁ brahmacariyaṁ, kataṁ karaṇīyaṁ, nāparaṁ itthattāyā’ti pajānāti.
He understands: 'Birth is destroyed, the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done, there is nothing further for this state of existence.'
6.7Ayamassa tatiyā vijjā adhigatā hoti;
This is his third knowledge attained;
6.8avijjā vihatā, vijjā uppannā; tamo vihato, āloko uppanno yathā taṁ appamattassa ātāpino pahitattassa viharatoti.
blindness [avijjā] is destroyed, knowledge has arisen; darkness is destroyed, light has arisen — as it comes to one who dwells diligent, ardent, and resolute.
7.1Yo sīlabbatasampanno,
One endowed with virtue and observances,
7.2pahitatto samāhito;
resolute, endowed with samādhi;
7.3Cittaṁ yassa vasībhūtaṁ,
Whose mind [citta] has come under mastery,
7.4ekaggaṁ susamāhitaṁ.
gathered, well-concentrated.
8.1Pubbenivāsaṁ yo vedī,
One who knows past abodes,
8.2saggāpāyañca passati;
and sees heaven and the lower realms;
8.3Atho jātikkhayaṁ patto,
And who has reached the destruction of birth,
8.4abhiññāvosito muni.
the sage perfected through direct knowledge.
9.1Etāhi tīhi vijjāhi,
With these three knowledges,
9.2tevijjo hoti brāhmaṇo;
a brahmin is one of the three knowledges;
9.3Tamahaṁ vadāmi tevijjaṁ,
That one I call one of the three knowledges,
9.4nāññaṁ lapitalāpananti.
not another who merely chatters and talks.
10.1Evaṁ kho, brāhmaṇa, ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hotī”ti.
"In this way, brahmin, one has the three knowledges in the vinaya of the noble ones."
10.2“Aññathā, bho gotama, brāhmaṇānaṁ tevijjo, aññathā ca pana ariyassa vinaye tevijjo hoti.
"It is one thing, Master Gotama, to have the three knowledges among brahmins, and another to have the three knowledges in the vinaya of the noble ones.
10.3Imassa ca, bho gotama, ariyassa vinaye tevijjassa brāhmaṇānaṁ tevijjo kalaṁ nāgghati soḷasiṁ.
And, Master Gotama, the three knowledges of brahmins are not worth a sixteenth part of the three knowledges in the vinaya of the noble ones.
11.1Abhikkantaṁ, bho gotama …pe…
"Excellent, Master Gotama …
11.2upāsakaṁ maṁ bhavaṁ gotamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaṁ saraṇaṁ gatan”ti.
Let Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge from this day forth, for life."
