Sarabha
1.1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—
So I have heard—
1.2ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā rājagahe viharati gijjhakūṭe pabbate.
at one time, the Bhagavā was dwelling at Rājagaha, on Vulture Peak mountain.
1.3Tena kho pana samayena sarabho nāma paribbājako acirapakkanto hoti imasmā dhammavinayā.
Now at that time, a wanderer named Sarabha had recently left this dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayā].
1.4So rājagahe parisati evaṁ vācaṁ bhāsati:
He was speaking these words in an assembly at Rājagaha:
1.5“aññāto mayā samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo.
"I have understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan.
1.6Aññāya ca panāhaṁ samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammaṁ evāhaṁ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto”ti.
And having understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan, that is why I have left that dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayā]."
1.7Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū pubbaṇhasamayaṁ nivāsetvā pattacīvaramādāya rājagahaṁ piṇḍāya pavisiṁsu.
Then several bhikkhus, having dressed in the morning, took their bowls and robes and entered Rājagaha for alms.
1.8Assosuṁ kho te bhikkhū sarabhassa paribbājakassa rājagahe parisati evaṁ vācaṁ bhāsamānassa:
Those bhikkhus heard Sarabha the wanderer speaking these words in an assembly at Rājagaha:
1.9“aññāto mayā samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo.
"I have understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan.
1.10Aññāya ca panāhaṁ samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammaṁ evāhaṁ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto”ti.
And having understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan, that is why I have left that dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayā]."
2.1Atha kho te bhikkhū rājagahe piṇḍāya caritvā pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkantā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinnā kho te bhikkhū bhagavantaṁ etadavocuṁ:
Then those bhikkhus, having walked for alms in Rājagaha, returned from the alms round after the meal and approached the Bhagavā. Having approached and paid homage to the Bhagavā, they sat to one side. Seated to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Bhagavā:
2.2“sarabho nāma, bhante, paribbājako acirapakkanto imasmā dhammavinayā.
"Bhante, a wanderer named Sarabha has recently left this dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayā].
2.3So rājagahe parisati evaṁ vācaṁ bhāsati:
He is speaking these words in an assembly at Rājagaha:
2.4‘aññāto mayā samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo.
'I have understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan.
2.5Aññāya ca panāhaṁ samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammaṁ evāhaṁ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto’ti.
And having understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan, that is why I have left that dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayā].'
2.6Sādhu, bhante, bhagavā yena sippinikātīraṁ paribbājakārāmo yena sarabho paribbājako tenupasaṅkamatu anukampaṁ upādāyā”ti.
It would be good, bhante, if the Bhagavā were to go to the wanderers' park on the bank of the Sappinī, to where Sarabha the wanderer is, out of compassion."
2.7Adhivāsesi bhagavā tuṇhībhāvena.
The Bhagavā consented by his silence.
3.1Atha kho bhagavā sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yena sippinikātīraṁ paribbājakārāmo yena sarabho paribbājako tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi. Nisajja kho bhagavā sarabhaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavoca:
Then the Bhagavā, in the evening, having emerged from seclusion, went to the wanderers' park on the bank of the Sappinī, to where Sarabha the wanderer was. Having approached, he sat down on the prepared seat. Seated, the Bhagavā said this to Sarabha the wanderer:
3.2“saccaṁ kira tvaṁ, sarabha, evaṁ vadesi:
"Is it true, Sarabha, that you say this:
3.3‘aññāto mayā samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo.
'I have understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan.
3.4Aññāya ca panāhaṁ samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammaṁ evāhaṁ tasmā dhammavinayā apakkanto’”ti?
And having understood the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan, that is why I have left that dhamma and vinaya [dhammavinayā]'?"
3.5Evaṁ vutte, sarabho paribbājako tuṇhī ahosi.
When this was said, Sarabha the wanderer was silent.
4.1Dutiyampi kho bhagavā sarabhaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavoca:
A second time the Bhagavā said this to Sarabha the wanderer:
4.2“vadehi, sarabha, kinti te aññāto samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo?
"Speak, Sarabha — what have you understood of the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan?
4.3Sace te aparipūraṁ bhavissati, ahaṁ paripūressāmi.
If it is incomplete for you, I will complete it.
4.4Sace pana te paripūraṁ bhavissati, ahaṁ anumodissāmī”ti.
But if it is complete for you, I will rejoice in it."
4.5Dutiyampi kho sarabho paribbājako tuṇhī ahosi.
A second time, Sarabha the wanderer was silent.
5.1Tatiyampi kho bhagavā sarabhaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavoca:
A third time the Bhagavā said this to Sarabha the wanderer:
5.2“yo kho, sarabha, paññāyati samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo vadehi, sarabha, kinti te aññāto samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo?
"Whatever is known as the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan — speak, Sarabha: what have you understood of the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan?
5.3Sace te aparipūraṁ bhavissati, ahaṁ paripūressāmi.
If it is incomplete for you, I will complete it.
5.4Sace pana te paripūraṁ bhavissati, ahaṁ anumodissāmī”ti.
But if it is complete for you, I will rejoice in it."
5.5Tatiyampi kho sarabho paribbājako tuṇhī ahosi.
A third time, Sarabha the wanderer was silent.
6.1Atha kho te paribbājakā sarabhaṁ paribbājakaṁ etadavocuṁ:
Then those wanderers said this to Sarabha the wanderer:
6.2“yadeva kho tvaṁ, āvuso sarabha, samaṇaṁ gotamaṁ yāceyyāsi tadeva te samaṇo gotamo pavāreti.
"Whatever you might ask of the ascetic Gotama, friend Sarabha, the ascetic Gotama offers you the same.
6.3Vadehāvuso sarabha, kinti te aññāto samaṇānaṁ sakyaputtikānaṁ dhammo?
Speak, friend Sarabha — what have you understood of the dhamma of the ascetics, the sons of the Sakyan?
6.4Sace te aparipūraṁ bhavissati, samaṇo gotamo paripūressati.
If it is incomplete for you, the ascetic Gotama will complete it.
6.5Sace pana te paripūraṁ bhavissati, samaṇo gotamo anumodissatī”ti.
But if it is complete for you, the ascetic Gotama will rejoice in it."
6.6Evaṁ vutte, sarabho paribbājako tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdi.
When this was said, Sarabha the wanderer sat silent, abashed, with shoulders drooping, head bowed, brooding, at a loss for words.
7.1Atha kho bhagavā sarabhaṁ paribbājakaṁ tuṇhībhūtaṁ maṅkubhūtaṁ pattakkhandhaṁ adhomukhaṁ pajjhāyantaṁ appaṭibhānaṁ viditvā te paribbājake etadavoca:
Then the Bhagavā, knowing that Sarabha the wanderer was sitting silent, abashed, with shoulders drooping, head bowed, brooding, at a loss for words, said this to those wanderers:
8.1“Yo kho maṁ, paribbājakā, evaṁ vadeyya:
"Whoever, wanderers, were to say this to me:
8.2‘sammāsambuddhassa te paṭijānato ime dhammā anabhisambuddhā’ti, tamahaṁ tattha sādhukaṁ samanuyuñjeyyaṁ samanugāheyyaṁ samanubhāseyyaṁ.
'You claim to be a fully self-awakened one, yet these dhammas have not been fully awakened to by you' — that person I would thoroughly question, probe, and examine on this matter.
8.3So vata mayā sādhukaṁ samanuyuñjiyamāno samanugāhiyamāno samanubhāsiyamāno aṭṭhānametaṁ anavakāso yaṁ so tiṇṇaṁ ṭhānānaṁ nāññataraṁ ṭhānaṁ nigaccheyya, aññena vā aññaṁ paṭicarissati, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmessati, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukarissati, tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdissati, seyyathāpi sarabho paribbājako.
That person, when thoroughly questioned, probed, and examined by me — it is impossible, there is no opportunity, that he would not fall into one of three positions: he would evade with irrelevancies, he would divert the conversation elsewhere, he would display anger, hatred, and displeasure, or he would sit silent, abashed, with shoulders drooping, head bowed, brooding, at a loss for words, just like Sarabha the wanderer.
9.1Yo kho maṁ, paribbājakā, evaṁ vadeyya:
Whoever, wanderers, were to say this to me:
9.2‘khīṇāsavassa te paṭijānato ime āsavā aparikkhīṇā’ti, tamahaṁ tattha sādhukaṁ samanuyuñjeyyaṁ samanugāheyyaṁ samanubhāseyyaṁ.
'You claim to be one whose āsavas are destroyed, yet these āsavas have not been fully destroyed by you' — that person I would thoroughly question, probe, and examine on this matter.
9.3So vata mayā sādhukaṁ samanuyuñjiyamāno samanugāhiyamāno samanubhāsiyamāno aṭṭhānametaṁ anavakāso yaṁ so tiṇṇaṁ ṭhānānaṁ nāññataraṁ ṭhānaṁ nigaccheyya, aññena vā aññaṁ paṭicarissati, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmessati, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukarissati, tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdissati, seyyathāpi sarabho paribbājako.
That person, when thoroughly questioned, probed, and examined by me — it is impossible, there is no opportunity, that he would not fall into one of three positions: he would evade with irrelevancies, he would divert the conversation elsewhere, he would display anger, hatred, and displeasure, or he would sit silent, abashed, with shoulders drooping, head bowed, brooding, at a loss for words, just like Sarabha the wanderer.
10.1Yo kho maṁ, paribbājakā, evaṁ vadeyya:
Whoever, wanderers, were to say this to me:
10.2‘yassa kho pana te atthāya dhammo desito, so na niyyāti takkarassa sammā dukkhakkhayāyā’ti, tamahaṁ tattha sādhukaṁ samanuyuñjeyyaṁ samanugāheyyaṁ samanubhāseyyaṁ.
'The dhamma you have taught for a certain purpose does not lead one who practices it to the complete ending of dukkha' — that person I would thoroughly question, probe, and examine on this matter.
10.3So vata mayā sādhukaṁ samanuyuñjiyamāno samanugāhiyamāno samanubhāsiyamāno aṭṭhānametaṁ anavakāso yaṁ so tiṇṇaṁ ṭhānānaṁ nāññataraṁ ṭhānaṁ nigaccheyya, aññena vā aññaṁ paṭicarissati, bahiddhā kathaṁ apanāmessati, kopañca dosañca appaccayañca pātukarissati, tuṇhībhūto maṅkubhūto pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjhāyanto appaṭibhāno nisīdissati, seyyathāpi sarabho paribbājako”ti.
That person, when thoroughly questioned, probed, and examined by me — it is impossible, there is no opportunity, that he would not fall into one of three positions: he would evade with irrelevancies, he would divert the conversation elsewhere, he would display anger, hatred, and displeasure, or he would sit silent, abashed, with shoulders drooping, head bowed, brooding, at a loss for words, just like Sarabha the wanderer."
10.4Atha kho bhagavā sippinikātīre paribbājakārāme tikkhattuṁ sīhanādaṁ naditvā vehāsaṁ pakkāmi.
Then the Bhagavā, having roared the lion's roar three times in the wanderers' park on the bank of the Sappinī, departed through the air.
11.1Atha kho te paribbājakā acirapakkantassa bhagavato sarabhaṁ paribbājakaṁ samantato vācāyasannitodakena sañjambharimakaṁsu:
Then those wanderers, soon after the Bhagavā had left, assailed Sarabha the wanderer on all sides with stinging words:
11.2“seyyathāpi, āvuso sarabha, brahāraññe jarasiṅgālo ‘sīhanādaṁ nadissāmī’ti siṅgālakaṁyeva nadati, bheraṇḍakaṁyeva nadati;
"Just as, friend Sarabha, an old jackal in a great forest, thinking 'I will roar the lion's roar,' roars only a jackal's howl, only a bheraṇḍaka's howl;
11.3evamevaṁ kho tvaṁ, āvuso sarabha, aññatreva samaṇena gotamena ‘sīhanādaṁ nadissāmī’ti siṅgālakaṁyeva nadasi bheraṇḍakaṁyeva nadasi.
in just the same way, friend Sarabha, away from the ascetic Gotama, thinking 'I will roar the lion's roar,' you howl only a jackal's howl, only a bheraṇḍaka's howl.
11.4Seyyathāpi, āvuso sarabha, ambukasañcarī ‘purisakaravitaṁ ravissāmī’ti ambukasañcariravitaṁyeva ravati;
Just as, friend Sarabha, a water-bird, thinking 'I will make the call of a peacock,' makes only a water-bird's call;
11.5evamevaṁ kho tvaṁ, āvuso sarabha, aññatreva samaṇena gotamena ‘purisakaravitaṁ ravissāmī’ti, ambukasañcariravitaṁyeva ravasi.
in just the same way, friend Sarabha, away from the ascetic Gotama, thinking 'I will make the call of a peacock,' you make only a water-bird's call.
11.6Seyyathāpi, āvuso sarabha, usabho suññāya gosālāya gambhīraṁ naditabbaṁ maññati;
Just as, friend Sarabha, a bull thinks it should bellow deeply in an empty cattle-shed;
11.7evamevaṁ kho tvaṁ, āvuso sarabha, aññatreva samaṇena gotamena gambhīraṁ naditabbaṁ maññasī”ti.
in just the same way, friend Sarabha, away from the ascetic Gotama, you think you should bellow deeply."
11.8Atha kho te paribbājakā sarabhaṁ paribbājakaṁ samantato vācāyasannitodakena sañjambharimakaṁsūti.
And so those wanderers assailed Sarabha the wanderer on all sides with stinging words.
