1.1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

Thus have I heard—

1.2ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā ukkaṭṭhāyaṁ viharati subhagavane sālarājamūle.

At one time the Bhagavā was dwelling at Ukkatthā, in the Subhaga Grove, at the root of a great sal tree.

2.1“sabbadhammamūlapariyāyaṁ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi.

Bhikkhus, I will teach you the root exposition of all dhammas [sabbadhammamūlapariyāyaṁ].

2.2Taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasi karotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

Listen to that, attend to it carefully, I will speak.”

2.3“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

“Yes, bhante,” those bhikkhus replied to the Bhagavā.

The Bhagavā said this:

3.1“Idha, bhikkhave, assutavā puthujjano ariyānaṁ adassāvī ariyadhammassa akovido ariyadhamme avinīto, sappurisānaṁ adassāvī sappurisadhammassa akovido sappurisadhamme avinīto—

“Here, bhikkhus, an uninstructed ordinary person, who has not seen the noble ones, who is unskilled in the noble dhamma [ariyadhammassa], untrained in the noble dhamma [ariyadhamme], who has not seen good persons, who is unskilled in the dhamma of good persons [sappurisadhammassa], untrained in the dhamma of good persons [sappurisadhamme]—

3.2pathaviṁ pathavito sañjānāti;

3.3pathaviṁ pathavito saññatvā pathaviṁ maññati, pathaviyā maññati, pathavito maññati, pathaviṁ meti maññati, pathaviṁ abhinandati.

And that bhikkhu, bhikkhus, who is an arahant, with āsavas destroyed [khīṇāsavo], who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, with the fetters of bhava entirely destroyed [parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojano], completely liberated through final knowledge—he too directly knows earth as earth;

75.1Yopi so, bhikkhave, bhikkhu arahaṁ khīṇāsavo vusitavā katakaraṇīyo ohitabhāro anuppattasadattho parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojano sammadaññā vimutto, sopi pathaviṁ pathavito abhijānāti;

And that bhikkhu, bhikkhus, who is an arahant, with āsavas destroyed [khīṇāsavo], who has lived the holy life, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, reached his own goal, with the fetters of bhava entirely destroyed [parikkhīṇabhavasaṁyojano], completely liberated through final knowledge—he too directly knows earth as earth;

171.6Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, ‘tathāgato sabbaso taṇhānaṁ khayā virāgā nirodhā cāgā paṭinissaggā anuttaraṁ sammāsambodhiṁ abhisambuddho’ti vadāmi.

Therefore, bhikkhus, I say that the Tathāgata has awakened to unsurpassed perfect awakening through the complete destruction, fading away, cessation, giving up, and letting go of all taṇhās.”

Those bhikkhus did not delight in what the Bhagavā said.

194.10Mūlapariyāyasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ paṭhamaṁ.

The first sutta, The Root of All Things, is concluded.
