The Forest Tract

1.1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

Thus have I heard—

At one time, the Bhagavā was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s park.

1.3Tatra kho bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:

There the Bhagavā addressed the bhikkhus:

1.4“bhikkhavo”ti.

Bhikkhus.”

Bhante,” those bhikkhus replied to the Bhagavā.

1.6Bhagavā etadavoca:

The Bhagavā said this:

2.1“vanapatthapariyāyaṁ vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi,

Bhikkhus, I will teach you an exposition on the forest tract.

2.2taṁ suṇātha, sādhukaṁ manasikarotha, bhāsissāmī”ti.

Listen to that, attend closely, I will speak.”

2.3“Evaṁ, bhante”ti kho te bhikkhū bhagavato paccassosuṁ.

“Yes, bhante,” those bhikkhus replied to the Bhagavā.

2.4Bhagavā etadavoca:

The Bhagavā said this:

3.1“Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu aññataraṁ vanapatthaṁ upanissāya viharati.

“Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells relying on a certain forest tract.

3.2Tassa taṁ vanapatthaṁ upanissāya viharato anupaṭṭhitā ceva sati na upaṭṭhāti, asamāhitañca cittaṁ na samādhiyati, aparikkhīṇā ca āsavā na parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattañca anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ nānupāpuṇāti.

While he is dwelling relying on that forest tract, sati that is not established does not become established, and mind [cittaṁ] that is not settled in samādhi [asamāhitañca] does not become settled in samādhi [samādhiyati], and āsavas that are not yet exhausted do not become exhausted, and he does not attain the unsurpassed security from bondage that he had not yet attained.

3.3Ye ca kho ime pabbajitena jīvitaparikkhārā samudānetabbā—cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārā—te kasirena samudāgacchanti.

And those requisites of life that are to be obtained by one gone forth—robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick—are obtained with difficulty.

3.4Tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Therefore, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu should reflect thus:

3.5‘ahaṁ kho imaṁ vanapatthaṁ upanissāya viharāmi, tassa me imaṁ vanapatthaṁ upanissāya viharato anupaṭṭhitā ceva sati na upaṭṭhāti, asamāhitañca cittaṁ na samādhiyati, aparikkhīṇā ca āsavā na parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattañca anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ nānupāpuṇāmi.

‘I am dwelling relying on this forest tract. While I am dwelling relying on this forest tract, sati that is not established does not become established, and mind [cittaṁ] that is not settled in samādhi [asamāhitañca] does not become settled in samādhi [samādhiyati], and āsavas that are not yet exhausted do not become exhausted, and I do not attain the unsurpassed security from bondage that I had not yet attained.

3.6Ye ca kho ime pabbajitena jīvitaparikkhārā samudānetabbā—cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārā—te kasirena samudāgacchantī’ti.

And those requisites of life that are to be obtained by one gone forth—robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick—are obtained with difficulty.’

3.7Tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā rattibhāgaṁ vā divasabhāgaṁ vā tamhā vanapatthā pakkamitabbaṁ, na vatthabbaṁ.

Therefore, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu should depart from that forest tract, whether by night or by day; he should not stay there.

4.1Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu aññataraṁ vanapatthaṁ upanissāya viharati.

But here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells relying on a certain forest tract.

It was not for the sake of robes that I went forth from the household life into homelessness, nor for the sake of almsfood … nor for the sake of lodgings … nor for the sake of medicinal requisites for the sick that I went forth from the household life into homelessness.

4.8Atha ca pana me imaṁ vanapatthaṁ upanissāya viharato anupaṭṭhitā ceva sati na upaṭṭhāti, asamāhitañca cittaṁ na samādhiyati, aparikkhīṇā ca āsavā na parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattañca anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ nānupāpuṇāmī’ti.

25.8Atha ca pana me imaṁ puggalaṁ upanissāya viharato anupaṭṭhitā ceva sati upaṭṭhāti, asamāhitañca cittaṁ samādhiyati, aparikkhīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattañca anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ anupāpuṇāmī’ti.

And yet, while I am dwelling relying on this person, sati that is not established becomes established, and mind [cittaṁ] that is not settled in samādhi [asamāhitañca] becomes settled in samādhi [samādhiyati], and āsavas that are not yet exhausted become exhausted, and I attain the unsurpassed security from bondage that I had not yet attained.’

25.9Tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā saṅkhāpi so puggalo anubandhitabbo, na pakkamitabbaṁ.

Therefore, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu should keep following that person without hesitation; he should not depart.

26.1Idha pana, bhikkhave, bhikkhu aññataraṁ puggalaṁ upanissāya viharati.

But here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu dwells relying on a certain person.

26.2Tassa taṁ puggalaṁ upanissāya viharato anupaṭṭhitā ceva sati upaṭṭhāti, asamāhitañca cittaṁ samādhiyati, aparikkhīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattañca anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ anupāpuṇāti.

While he is dwelling relying on that person, sati that is not established becomes established, and mind [cittaṁ] that is not settled in samādhi [asamāhitañca] becomes settled in samādhi [samādhiyati], and āsavas that are not yet exhausted become exhausted, and he attains the unsurpassed security from bondage that he had not yet attained.

26.3Ye ca kho ime pabbajitena jīvitaparikkhārā samudānetabbā—cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārā—te appakasirena samudāgacchanti.

And those requisites of life that are to be obtained by one gone forth—robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick—are obtained without much difficulty.

26.4Tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā iti paṭisañcikkhitabbaṁ:

Therefore, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu should reflect thus:

26.5‘ahaṁ kho imaṁ puggalaṁ upanissāya viharāmi. Tassa me imaṁ puggalaṁ upanissāya viharato anupaṭṭhitā ceva sati upaṭṭhāti, asamāhitañca cittaṁ samādhiyati, aparikkhīṇā ca āsavā parikkhayaṁ gacchanti, ananuppattañca anuttaraṁ yogakkhemaṁ anupāpuṇāmi.

‘I am dwelling relying on this person. While I am dwelling relying on this person, sati that is not established becomes established, and mind [cittaṁ] that is not settled in samādhi [asamāhitañca] becomes settled in samādhi [samādhiyati], and āsavas that are not yet exhausted become exhausted, and I attain the unsurpassed security from bondage that I had not yet attained.

26.6Ye ca kho ime pabbajitena jīvitaparikkhārā samudānetabbā—cīvarapiṇḍapātasenāsanagilānappaccayabhesajjaparikkhārā—te appakasirena samudāgacchantī’ti.

26.7Tena, bhikkhave, bhikkhunā yāvajīvampi so puggalo anubandhitabbo, na pakkamitabbaṁ, api panujjamānenapī”ti.

Therefore, bhikkhus, that bhikkhu should keep following that person even for life; he should not depart, even if he is being sent away.”

26.8Idamavoca bhagavā.

This is what the Bhagavā said.

26.9Attamanā te bhikkhū bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

Satisfied, those bhikkhus approved of what the Bhagavā said.

26.10Vanapatthasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ sattamaṁ.

The seventh, the Forest Tract, is finished.
