1.1Evaṁ me sutaṁ—

Thus have I heard—

1.2ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā gosiṅgasālavanadāye viharati sambahulehi abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṁ—

At one time the Bhagavā was dwelling in the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood together with many distinguished elder disciples—

1.3āyasmatā ca sāriputtena āyasmatā ca mahāmoggallānena āyasmatā ca mahākassapena āyasmatā ca anuruddhena āyasmatā ca revatena āyasmatā ca ānandena, aññehi ca abhiññātehi abhiññātehi therehi sāvakehi saddhiṁ.

with Venerable Sāriputta, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, Venerable Mahākassapa, Venerable Anuruddha, Venerable Revata, Venerable Ānanda, and other distinguished elder disciples.

2.1Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno sāyanhasamayaṁ paṭisallānā vuṭṭhito yenāyasmā mahākassapo tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ mahākassapaṁ etadavoca:

Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, in the evening, having come out of seclusion, went to Venerable Mahākassapa. Having gone to him, he said:

2.2“āyāmāvuso, kassapa, yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkamissāma dhammassavanāyā”ti.

“Come, friend Kassapa, let us go to Venerable Sāriputta to listen to the dhamma [dhammassavanāya].”

2.3“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā mahākassapo āyasmato mahāmoggallānassa paccassosi.

“Yes, friend,” Venerable Mahākassapa replied to Venerable Mahāmoggallāna.

2.4Atha kho āyasmā ca mahāmoggallāno āyasmā ca mahākassapo āyasmā ca anuruddho yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkamiṁsu dhammassavanāya.

Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, Venerable Mahākassapa, and Venerable Anuruddha went to Venerable Sāriputta to listen to the dhamma [dhammassavanāya].

3.1Addasā kho āyasmā ānando āyasmantañca mahāmoggallānaṁ āyasmantañca mahākassapaṁ āyasmantañca anuruddhaṁ yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkamante dhammassavanāya.

Venerable Ānanda saw Venerable Mahāmoggallāna, Venerable Mahākassapa, and Venerable Anuruddha going to Venerable Sāriputta to listen to the dhamma [dhammassavanāya].

3.2Disvāna yenāyasmā revato tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmantaṁ revataṁ etadavoca:

Seeing them, he went to Venerable Revata. Having gone to him, he said:

3.3“upasaṅkamantā kho amū, āvuso revata, sappurisā yenāyasmā sāriputto tena dhammassavanāya.

“Those good men are going, friend Revata, to Venerable Sāriputta to listen to the dhamma [dhammassavanāya].

3.4Āyāmāvuso revata, yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkamissāma dhammassavanāyā”ti.

Come, friend Revata, let us go to Venerable Sāriputta to listen to the dhamma [dhammassavanāya].”

3.5“Evamāvuso”ti kho āyasmā revato āyasmato ānandassa paccassosi.

“Yes, friend,” Venerable Revata replied to Venerable Ānanda.

3.6Atha kho āyasmā ca revato āyasmā ca ānando yenāyasmā sāriputto tenupasaṅkamiṁsu dhammassavanāya.

Then Venerable Revata and Venerable Ānanda went to Venerable Sāriputta to listen to the dhamma [dhammassavanāya].

4.1Addasā kho āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantañca revataṁ āyasmantañca ānandaṁ dūratova āgacchante.

Venerable Sāriputta saw Venerable Revata and Venerable Ānanda coming from far off.

4.2Disvāna āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etadavoca:

Seeing them, he said to Venerable Ānanda:

4.3“etu kho āyasmā ānando.

“Let Venerable Ānanda come.

4.4Svāgataṁ āyasmato ānandassa bhagavato upaṭṭhākassa bhagavato santikāvacarassa.

Welcome to Venerable Ānanda, the Bhagavā’s attendant, one who moves near the Bhagavā.

4.5Ramaṇīyaṁ, āvuso ānanda, gosiṅgasālavanaṁ, dosinā ratti, sabbaphāliphullā sālā, dibbā, maññe, gandhā sampavanti;

Lovely, friend Ānanda, is the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood; the night is moonlit, the sal trees are all in full blossom, and divine fragrances, it seems, are wafting about.

4.6kathaṁrūpena, āvuso ānanda, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti?

What kind of bhikkhu, friend Ānanda, would beautify the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood?”

4.7“Idhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu bahussuto hoti sutadharo sutasannicayo. Ye te dhammā ādikalyāṇā majjhekalyāṇā pariyosānakalyāṇā sātthā sabyañjanā; kevalaparipuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ abhivadanti, tathārūpāssa dhammā bahussutā honti, dhātā, vacasā paricitā, manasānupekkhitā, diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā.

“Here, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu is learned, one who retains what he has heard, a storehouse of what he has heard. Those dhammas that are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-worded, which proclaim the perfectly complete and pure holy life—such dhammas are much heard by him, retained, recited verbally, examined by the mind [citta], and well penetrated by view.

4.8So catassannaṁ parisānaṁ dhammaṁ deseti parimaṇḍalehi padabyañjanehi anuppabandhehi anusayasamugghātāya.

He teaches the dhamma to the four assemblies with well-rounded words and phrases, in connected sequence, for the uprooting of underlying tendencies [anusayasamugghātāya].

4.9Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.”

5.1Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ revataṁ etadavoca:

When this was said, Venerable Sāriputta said to Venerable Revata:

5.2“byākataṁ kho, āvuso revata, āyasmatā ānandena yathāsakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ.

“Venerable Ānanda has explained according to his own inspiration, friend Revata.

5.3Tattha dāni mayaṁ āyasmantaṁ revataṁ pucchāma:

Now then, we ask Venerable Revata:

5.4‘ramaṇīyaṁ, āvuso revata, gosiṅgasālavanaṁ, dosinā ratti, sabbaphāliphullā sālā, dibbā, maññe, gandhā sampavanti;

‘Lovely, friend Revata, is the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood; the night is moonlit, the sal trees are all in full blossom, and divine fragrances, it seems, are wafting about.

5.5kathaṁrūpena, āvuso revata, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’”ti?

What kind of bhikkhu, friend Revata, would beautify the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood?’”

5.6“Idhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu paṭisallānārāmo hoti paṭisallānarato, ajjhattaṁ cetosamathamanuyutto anirākatajjhāno, vipassanāya samannāgato, brūhetā suññāgārānaṁ.

“Here, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu delights in seclusion and enjoys seclusion, is devoted inwardly to settling of the mind [cetosamatha], does not neglect meditation [anirākatajjhāno], is endowed with insight [vipassanāya], and frequents empty dwellings.

5.7Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.”

6.1Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ anuruddhaṁ etadavoca:

When this was said, Venerable Sāriputta said to Venerable Anuruddha:

6.6“Idhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaṁ lokānaṁ voloketi.

“Here, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu, with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, surveys a thousand worlds.

6.7Seyyathāpi, āvuso sāriputta, cakkhumā puriso uparipāsādavaragato sahassaṁ nemimaṇḍalānaṁ volokeyya;

Just as, friend Sāriputta, a person with good eyes, having gone up to the upper terrace of a palace, might survey a thousand wheel-rims;

6.8evameva kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaṁ lokānaṁ voloketi.

in just the same way, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu, with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, surveys a thousand worlds.

6.9Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.”

7.6“Idhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu attanā ca āraññiko hoti āraññikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca piṇḍapātiko hoti piṇḍapātikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca paṁsukūliko hoti paṁsukūlikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca tecīvariko hoti tecīvarikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca appiccho hoti appicchatāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca santuṭṭho hoti santuṭṭhiyā ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca pavivitto hoti pavivekassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca asaṁsaṭṭho hoti asaṁsaggassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca āraddhavīriyo hoti vīriyārambhassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca sīlasampanno hoti sīlasampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca samādhisampanno hoti samādhisampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca paññāsampanno hoti paññāsampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca vimuttisampanno hoti vimuttisampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca vimuttiñāṇadassanasampanno hoti vimuttiñāṇadassanasampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī.

“Here, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu is himself a forest-dweller and speaks in praise of forest-dwelling; he himself lives on almsfood and speaks in praise of living on almsfood; he himself wears rag-robes and speaks in praise of wearing rag-robes; he himself uses only three robes and speaks in praise of using only three robes; he himself has few wishes and speaks in praise of fewness of wishes; he himself is content and speaks in praise of contentment; he himself is secluded [pavivitto] and speaks in praise of seclusion [viveka]; he himself does not mix and speaks in praise of non-association; he himself has aroused energy and speaks in praise of arousing energy; he himself is accomplished in virtue and speaks in praise of accomplishment in virtue; he himself is accomplished in samādhi [samādhisampanno] and speaks in praise of accomplishment in samādhi [samādhisampadāya]; he himself is accomplished in discernment [paññāsampanno] and speaks in praise of accomplishment in discernment [paññāsampadāya]; he himself is accomplished in liberation and speaks in praise of accomplishment in liberation; he himself is accomplished in knowledge and vision of liberation and speaks in praise of accomplishment in knowledge and vision of liberation.

7.7Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.”

8.1Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ etadavoca:

8.2“byākataṁ kho, āvuso moggallāna, āyasmatā mahākassapena yathāsakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ.

“Venerable Mahākassapa has explained according to his own inspiration, friend Moggallāna.

8.3Tattha dāni mayaṁ āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ pucchāma:

Now then, we ask Venerable Mahāmoggallāna:

8.4‘ramaṇīyaṁ, āvuso moggallāna, gosiṅgasālavanaṁ, dosinā ratti, sabbaphāliphullā sālā, dibbā, maññe, gandhā sampavanti;

8.5kathaṁrūpena, āvuso moggallāna, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’”ti?

8.6“Idhāvuso sāriputta, dve bhikkhū abhidhammakathaṁ kathenti, te aññamaññaṁ pañhaṁ pucchanti, aññamaññassa pañhaṁ puṭṭhā vissajjenti, no ca saṁsādenti, dhammī ca nesaṁ kathā pavattinī hoti.

“Here, friend Sāriputta, two bhikkhus engage in a discussion on the dhamma [abhidhammakathaṁ]. They ask one another questions, and when asked, they answer one another’s questions; they do not leave one another at a loss, and their discussion proceeds in line with the dhamma.

8.7Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.”

9.1Atha kho āyasmā mahāmoggallāno āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavoca:

Then Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to Venerable Sāriputta:

9.2“byākataṁ kho, āvuso sāriputta, amhehi sabbeheva yathāsakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ.

“All of us have explained according to our own inspiration, friend Sāriputta.

9.3Tattha dāni mayaṁ āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ pucchāma:

Now then, we ask Venerable Sāriputta:

9.4‘ramaṇīyaṁ, āvuso sāriputta, gosiṅgasālavanaṁ, dosinā ratti, sabbaphāliphullā sālā, dibbā, maññe, gandhā sampavanti;

‘Lovely, friend Sāriputta, is the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood; the night is moonlit, the sal trees are all in full blossom, and divine fragrances, it seems, are wafting about.

9.6“Idhāvuso moggallāna, bhikkhu cittaṁ vasaṁ vatteti, no ca bhikkhu cittassa vasena vattati.

“Here, friend Moggallāna, a bhikkhu keeps mind [citta] under control and does not come under the control of mind [citta].

9.7So yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharati;

With whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the morning, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the morning;

9.8yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharati;

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in at midday, he dwells in that meditative attainment at midday;

9.9yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati sāyanhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā sāyanhasamayaṁ viharati.

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the evening, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the evening.

9.10Seyyathāpi, āvuso moggallāna, rañño vā rājamahāmattassa vā nānārattānaṁ dussānaṁ dussakaraṇḍako pūro assa.

Just as, friend Moggallāna, a king or a chief minister might have a clothes chest full of cloths of various colors.

9.11So yaññadeva dussayugaṁ ākaṅkheyya pubbaṇhasamayaṁ pārupituṁ, taṁ tadeva dussayugaṁ pubbaṇhasamayaṁ pārupeyya;

Whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on in the morning, that very pair of garments he would put on in the morning;

9.12yaññadeva dussayugaṁ ākaṅkheyya majjhanhikasamayaṁ pārupituṁ, taṁ tadeva dussayugaṁ majjhanhikasamayaṁ pārupeyya;

whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on at midday, that very pair of garments he would put on at midday;

9.13yaññadeva dussayugaṁ ākaṅkheyya sāyanhasamayaṁ pārupituṁ, taṁ tadeva dussayugaṁ sāyanhasamayaṁ pārupeyya.

whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on in the evening, that very pair of garments he would put on in the evening.

9.14Evameva kho, āvuso moggallāna, bhikkhu cittaṁ vasaṁ vatteti, no ca bhikkhu cittassa vasena vattati.

In just the same way, friend Moggallāna, a bhikkhu keeps mind [citta] under control and does not come under the control of mind [citta].

9.15So yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharati;

With whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the morning, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the morning;

9.16yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharati;

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in at midday, he dwells in that meditative attainment at midday;

9.17yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati sāyanhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā sāyanhasamayaṁ viharati.

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the evening, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the evening.

9.18Evarūpena kho, āvuso moggallāna, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Moggallāna, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.”

10.1Atha kho āyasmā sāriputto te āyasmante etadavoca:

Then Venerable Sāriputta said to those venerables:

10.2“byākataṁ kho, āvuso, amhehi sabbeheva yathāsakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ.

“All of us have explained according to our own inspiration, friends.

10.3Āyāmāvuso, yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamissāma; upasaṅkamitvā etamatthaṁ bhagavato ārocessāma.

Come, friends, let us go to the Bhagavā. Having gone to him, we will report this matter to the Bhagavā.

10.4Yathā no bhagavā byākarissati tathā naṁ dhāressāmā”ti.

As the Bhagavā explains it to us, so we will remember it.”

10.5“Evamāvuso”ti kho te āyasmanto āyasmato sāriputtassa paccassosuṁ.

“Yes, friend,” those venerables replied to Venerable Sāriputta.

10.6Atha kho te āyasmanto yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkamiṁsu; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavantaṁ abhivādetvā ekamantaṁ nisīdiṁsu. Ekamantaṁ nisinno kho āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

Then those venerables went to the Bhagavā. Having gone to him, they paid homage to the Bhagavā and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Bhagavā:

11.1“idha, bhante, āyasmā ca revato āyasmā ca ānando yenāhaṁ tenupasaṅkamiṁsu dhammassavanāya.

“Here, bhante, Venerable Revata and Venerable Ānanda came to me to listen to the dhamma [dhammassavanāya].

11.2Addasaṁ kho ahaṁ, bhante, āyasmantañca revataṁ āyasmantañca ānandaṁ dūratova āgacchante.

I saw Venerable Revata and Venerable Ānanda coming from far off.

11.3Disvāna āyasmantaṁ ānandaṁ etadavocaṁ:

Seeing them, I said to Venerable Ānanda:

“Sādhu, sādhu, Sāriputta.

11.13Yathā taṁ ānandova sammā byākaramāno byākareyya.

That is exactly as Ānanda, answering rightly, would answer.

11.14Ānando hi, sāriputta, bahussuto sutadharo sutasannicayo. Ye te dhammā ādikalyāṇā majjhekalyāṇā pariyosānakalyāṇā sātthā sabyañjanā; kevalaparipuṇṇaṁ parisuddhaṁ brahmacariyaṁ abhivadanti, tathārūpāssa dhammā bahussutā honti, dhātā, vacasā paricitā, manasānupekkhitā, diṭṭhiyā suppaṭividdhā.

For Ānanda, Sāriputta, is learned, one who retains what he has heard, a storehouse of what he has heard. Those dhammas that are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-worded, which proclaim the perfectly complete and pure holy life—such dhammas are much heard by him, retained, recited verbally, examined by the mind [citta], and well penetrated by view.

11.15So catassannaṁ parisānaṁ dhammaṁ deseti parimaṇḍalehi padabyañjanehi anuppabandhehi anusayasamugghātāyā”ti.

He teaches the dhamma to the four assemblies with well-rounded words and phrases, in connected sequence, for the uprooting of underlying tendencies [anusayasamugghātāya].”

12.1“Evaṁ vutte, ahaṁ, bhante, āyasmantaṁ revataṁ etadavocaṁ:

“When this was said, bhante, I said to Venerable Revata:

12.2‘byākataṁ kho, āvuso revata, āyasmatā ānandena yathāsakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ.

‘Venerable Ānanda has explained according to his own inspiration, friend Revata.

12.3Tattha dāni mayaṁ āyasmantaṁ revataṁ pucchāma—

Now then, we ask Venerable Revata—

12.4ramaṇīyaṁ, āvuso revata, gosiṅgasālavanaṁ, dosinā ratti, sabbaphāliphullā sālā, dibbā maññe gandhā sampavanti.

Lovely, friend Revata, is the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood; the night is moonlit, the sal trees are all in full blossom, and divine fragrances, it seems, are wafting about.

12.5Kathaṁrūpena, āvuso revata, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’ti?

What kind of bhikkhu, friend Revata, would beautify the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood?’

12.6Evaṁ vutte, bhante, āyasmā revato maṁ etadavoca:

When this was said, bhante, Venerable Revata said to me:

12.7‘idhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu paṭisallānārāmo hoti paṭisallānarato, ajjhattaṁ cetosamathamanuyutto, anirākatajjhāno, vipassanāya samannāgato, brūhetā suññāgārānaṁ.

‘Here, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu delights in seclusion and enjoys seclusion, is devoted inwardly to settling of the mind [cetosamatha], does not neglect meditation [anirākatajjhāno], is endowed with insight [vipassanāya], and frequents empty dwellings.

12.8Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.’”

“Sādhu, sādhu, Sāriputta.

12.10Yathā taṁ revatova sammā byākaramāno byākareyya.

That is exactly as Revata, answering rightly, would answer.

12.11Revato hi, sāriputta, paṭisallānārāmo paṭisallānarato, ajjhattaṁ cetosamathamanuyutto anirākatajjhāno, vipassanāya samannāgato brūhetā suññāgārānan”ti.

For Revata, Sāriputta, delights in seclusion and enjoys seclusion, is devoted inwardly to settling of the mind [cetosamatha], does not neglect meditation [anirākatajjhāno], is endowed with insight [vipassanāya], and frequents empty dwellings.”

When this was said, bhante, Venerable Anuruddha said to me:

13.5‘idhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaṁ lokānaṁ voloketi.

‘Here, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu, with the divine eye, purified and surpassing the human, surveys a thousand worlds.

13.6Seyyathāpi, āvuso sāriputta, cakkhumā puriso …pe…

Just as, friend Sāriputta, a person with good eyes …

13.7evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’”ti.

it is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.’”

13.8“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta, yathā taṁ anuruddhova sammā byākaramāno byākareyya.

“Sādhu, sādhu, Sāriputta. That is exactly as Anuruddha, answering rightly, would answer.

13.9Anuruddho hi, sāriputta, dibbena cakkhunā visuddhena atikkantamānusakena sahassaṁ lokānaṁ voloketī”ti.

14.6‘idhāvuso sāriputta, bhikkhu attanā ca āraññiko hoti āraññikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca piṇḍapātiko hoti …pe… attanā ca paṁsukūliko hoti …pe… attanā ca tecīvariko hoti …pe… attanā ca appiccho hoti …pe… attanā ca santuṭṭho hoti …pe… attanā ca pavivitto hoti …pe… attanā ca asaṁsaṭṭho hoti …pe… attanā ca āraddhavīriyo hoti …pe… attanā ca sīlasampanno hoti …pe… attanā ca samādhisampanno hoti …pe… attanā ca paññāsampanno hoti … attanā ca vimuttisampanno hoti … attanā ca vimuttiñāṇadassanasampanno hoti vimuttiñāṇadassanasampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī.

‘Here, friend Sāriputta, a bhikkhu is himself a forest-dweller and speaks in praise of forest-dwelling; he himself lives on almsfood and speaks in praise of living on almsfood; … he himself wears rag-robes and speaks in praise of wearing rag-robes; … he himself uses only three robes and speaks in praise of using only three robes; … he himself has few wishes and speaks in praise of fewness of wishes; … he himself is content and speaks in praise of contentment; … he himself is secluded [pavivitto] and speaks in praise of seclusion [viveka]; … he himself does not mix and speaks in praise of non-association; … he himself has aroused energy and speaks in praise of arousing energy; … he himself is accomplished in virtue and speaks in praise of accomplishment in virtue; … he himself is accomplished in samādhi [samādhisampanno] and speaks in praise of accomplishment in samādhi [samādhisampadāya]; … he himself is accomplished in discernment [paññāsampanno] … he himself is accomplished in liberation … he himself is accomplished in knowledge and vision of liberation and speaks in praise of accomplishment in knowledge and vision of liberation.

14.7Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.’”

14.8“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta.

14.9Yathā taṁ kassapova sammā byākaramāno byākareyya.

That is exactly as Kassapa, answering rightly, would answer.

14.10Kassapo hi, sāriputta, attanā ca āraññiko āraññikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca piṇḍapātiko piṇḍapātikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca paṁsukūliko paṁsukūlikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca tecīvariko tecīvarikattassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca appiccho appicchatāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca santuṭṭho santuṭṭhiyā ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca pavivitto pavivekassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca asaṁsaṭṭho asaṁsaggassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca āraddhavīriyo vīriyārambhassa ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca sīlasampanno sīlasampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca samādhisampanno samādhisampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca paññāsampanno paññāsampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca vimuttisampanno vimuttisampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī, attanā ca vimuttiñāṇadassanasampanno vimuttiñāṇadassanasampadāya ca vaṇṇavādī”ti.

For Kassapa, Sāriputta, is himself a forest-dweller and speaks in praise of forest-dwelling; he himself lives on almsfood and speaks in praise of living on almsfood; he himself wears rag-robes and speaks in praise of wearing rag-robes; he himself uses only three robes and speaks in praise of using only three robes; he himself has few wishes and speaks in praise of fewness of wishes; he himself is content and speaks in praise of contentment; he himself is secluded [pavivitto] and speaks in praise of seclusion [viveka]; he himself does not mix and speaks in praise of non-association; he himself has aroused energy and speaks in praise of arousing energy; he himself is accomplished in virtue and speaks in praise of accomplishment in virtue; he himself is accomplished in samādhi [samādhisampanno] and speaks in praise of accomplishment in samādhi [samādhisampadāya]; he himself is accomplished in discernment [paññāsampanno] and speaks in praise of accomplishment in discernment [paññāsampadāya]; he himself is accomplished in liberation and speaks in praise of accomplishment in liberation; he himself is accomplished in knowledge and vision of liberation and speaks in praise of accomplishment in knowledge and vision of liberation.”

15.1“Evaṁ vutte, ahaṁ bhante āyasmantaṁ mahāmoggallānaṁ etadavocaṁ:

“When this was said, bhante, I said to Venerable Mahāmoggallāna:

15.2‘byākataṁ kho, āvuso moggallāna, āyasmatā mahākassapena yathāsakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ.

‘Venerable Mahākassapa has explained according to his own inspiration, friend Moggallāna.

15.5Evaṁ vutte, bhante, āyasmā mahāmoggallāno maṁ etadavoca:

When this was said, bhante, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to me:

15.6‘idhāvuso sāriputta, dve bhikkhū abhidhammakathaṁ kathenti. Te aññamaññaṁ pañhaṁ pucchanti, aññamaññassa pañhaṁ puṭṭhā vissajjenti, no ca saṁsādenti, dhammī ca nesaṁ kathā pavattinī hoti.

‘Here, friend Sāriputta, two bhikkhus engage in a discussion on the dhamma [abhidhammakathaṁ]. They ask one another questions; when asked, they answer one another’s questions; they do not leave one another at a loss, and their discussion proceeds in line with the dhamma.

15.7Evarūpena kho, āvuso sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.’”

15.8“Sādhu sādhu, sāriputta, yathā taṁ moggallānova sammā byākaramāno byākareyya.

“Sādhu, sādhu, Sāriputta, that is exactly as Moggallāna, answering rightly, would answer.

15.9Moggallāno hi, sāriputta, dhammakathiko”ti.

For Moggallāna, Sāriputta, is a speaker on the dhamma [dhammakathiko].”

16.1Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā mahāmoggallāno bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

When this was said, Venerable Mahāmoggallāna said to the Bhagavā:

16.2“atha khvāhaṁ, bhante, āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ etadavocaṁ:

“Then, bhante, I said to Venerable Sāriputta:

16.3‘byākataṁ kho, āvuso sāriputta, amhehi sabbeheva yathāsakaṁ paṭibhānaṁ.

‘All of us have explained according to our own inspiration, friend Sāriputta.

16.4Tattha dāni mayaṁ āyasmantaṁ sāriputtaṁ pucchāma—

Now then, we ask Venerable Sāriputta—

16.5ramaṇīyaṁ, āvuso sāriputta, gosiṅgasālavanaṁ, dosinā ratti, sabbaphāliphullā sālā, dibbā, maññe, gandhā sampavanti.

16.8‘idhāvuso moggallāna, bhikkhu cittaṁ vasaṁ vatteti no ca bhikkhu cittassa vasena vattati.

‘Here, friend Moggallāna, a bhikkhu keeps mind [citta] under control and does not come under the control of mind [citta].

16.9So yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharati;

With whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the morning, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the morning;

16.10yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharati;

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in at midday, he dwells in that meditative attainment at midday;

16.11yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati sāyanhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā sāyanhasamayaṁ viharati.

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the evening, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the evening.

16.12Seyyathāpi, āvuso moggallāna, rañño vā rājamahāmattassa vā nānārattānaṁ dussānaṁ dussakaraṇḍako pūro assa.

Just as, friend Moggallāna, a king or a chief minister might have a clothes chest full of cloths of various colors.

16.13So yaññadeva dussayugaṁ ākaṅkheyya pubbaṇhasamayaṁ pārupituṁ, taṁ tadeva dussayugaṁ pubbaṇhasamayaṁ pārupeyya;

Whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on in the morning, that very pair of garments he would put on in the morning;

16.14yaññadeva dussayugaṁ ākaṅkheyya majjhanhikasamayaṁ pārupituṁ, taṁ tadeva dussayugaṁ majjhanhikasamayaṁ pārupeyya;

whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on at midday, that very pair of garments he would put on at midday;

16.15yaññadeva dussayugaṁ ākaṅkheyya sāyanhasamayaṁ pārupituṁ, taṁ tadeva dussayugaṁ sāyanhasamayaṁ pārupeyya.

whatever pair of garments he might wish to put on in the evening, that very pair of garments he would put on in the evening.

16.16Evameva kho, āvuso moggallāna, bhikkhu cittaṁ vasaṁ vatteti, no ca bhikkhu cittassa vasena vattati.

In just the same way, friend Moggallāna, a bhikkhu keeps mind [citta] under control and does not come under the control of mind [citta].

16.17So yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharati;

With whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the morning, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the morning;

16.18yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharati;

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in at midday, he dwells in that meditative attainment at midday;

16.19yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati sāyanhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā sāyanhasamayaṁ viharati.

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the evening, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the evening.

16.20Evarūpena kho, āvuso moggallāna, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā’”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, friend Moggallāna, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.’”

16.21“Sādhu sādhu, moggallāna.

“Sādhu, sādhu, Moggallāna.

16.22Yathā taṁ sāriputtova sammā byākaramāno byākareyya.

That is exactly as Sāriputta, answering rightly, would answer.

16.23Sāriputto hi, moggallāna, cittaṁ vasaṁ vatteti no ca sāriputto cittassa vasena vattati.

For Sāriputta, Moggallāna, keeps mind [citta] under control and does not come under the control of mind [citta].

16.24So yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā pubbaṇhasamayaṁ viharati;

With whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the morning, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the morning;

16.25yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā majjhanhikasamayaṁ viharati;

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in at midday, he dwells in that meditative attainment at midday;

16.26yāya vihārasamāpattiyā ākaṅkhati sāyanhasamayaṁ viharituṁ, tāya vihārasamāpattiyā sāyanhasamayaṁ viharatī”ti.

with whichever meditative attainment he wishes to dwell in during the evening, he dwells in that meditative attainment during the evening.”

17.1Evaṁ vutte, āyasmā sāriputto bhagavantaṁ etadavoca:

When this was said, Venerable Sāriputta said to the Bhagavā:

17.2“kassa nu kho, bhante, subhāsitan”ti?

“Whose statement, bhante, was well spoken?”

17.3“Sabbesaṁ vo, sāriputta, subhāsitaṁ pariyāyena.

“All of you, Sāriputta, have spoken well, each in a way.

17.4Api ca mamapi suṇātha yathārūpena bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyya.

But now listen to me too as to what kind of bhikkhu would beautify the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood.

17.5Idha, sāriputta, bhikkhu pacchābhattaṁ piṇḍapātapaṭikkanto nisīdati pallaṅkaṁ ābhujitvā ujuṁ kāyaṁ paṇidhāya parimukhaṁ satiṁ upaṭṭhapetvā:

Here, Sāriputta, after the meal, on returning from the almsround, a bhikkhu sits down, folding his legs crosswise, setting his body erect, and establishing sati before him:

17.6‘na tāvāhaṁ imaṁ pallaṅkaṁ bhindissāmi yāva me nānupādāya āsavehi cittaṁ vimuccissatī’ti.

‘I will not break this cross-legged seat until my mind [citta] is liberated from the āsavas through non-clinging/feeding [anupādāya].’

17.7Evarūpena kho, sāriputta, bhikkhunā gosiṅgasālavanaṁ sobheyyā”ti.

It is by such a bhikkhu, Sāriputta, that the Gosiṅga sal-tree wood would be beautified.”

17.8Idamavoca bhagavā.

This is what the Bhagavā said.

17.9Attamanā te āyasmanto bhagavato bhāsitaṁ abhinandunti.

Those venerables were glad and rejoiced in what the Bhagavā had said.

17.10Mahāgosiṅgasuttaṁ niṭṭhitaṁ dutiyaṁ.

The Greater Discourse at Gosiṅga, the second, is finished.
