1.1“Dvemāni, bhikkhave, sukhāni.

“There are these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus.

1.2Katamāni dve?

Which two?

1.3Gihisukhañca pabbajitasukhañca.

The sukha of a householder and the sukha of one gone forth.

1.4Imāni kho, bhikkhave, dve sukhāni.

These, bhikkhus, are the two kinds of sukha.

1.5Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ pabbajitasukhan”ti.

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is the sukha of one gone forth.”

1.3Kāmasukhañca nekkhammasukhañca.

Sensual sukha and the sukha of renunciation.

1.5Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nekkhammasukhan”ti.

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is the sukha of renunciation.”

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is sukha without acquisitions.”

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is non-material sukha.”

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is noble sukha.”

1.5Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ cetasikaṁ sukhan”ti.

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is mental sukha.”

1.5Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ nippītikaṁ sukhan”ti.

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is sukha without pīti.”

1.5Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ upekkhāsukhan”ti.

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is the sukha of equanimity [upekkhā].”

1.5Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ upekkhārammaṇaṁ sukhan”ti.

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is sukha with an equanimity [upekkhā] object.”

1.5Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, imesaṁ dvinnaṁ sukhānaṁ yadidaṁ arūpārammaṇaṁ sukhan”ti.

The foremost of these two kinds of sukha, bhikkhus, is sukha with a formless object.”
